Students are expected to be able to explain, discuss, and apply motivational theories, concepts, and research findings. Required Text: Deckers, L. (2010). Motivation: Biological, Psychological, and Environmental. (3rd Ed.) New York: Allyn & Bacon. ISBN 978-0-205-61081-5 Requirements and Attendance: - Please note this is a three credit hour hybrid class. We will meet two hours each week and you will have 10 “Third Hour Assignments” during the course that will be responded to electronically. - Regular attendance, reading the assigned text, and active participation during class are essential in order to prepare for the exams and complete the course assignments. - Students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss relevant topics and to engage in class activities. - Required readings should be completed by the listed date in order for you to be prepared for topics that will be discussed in class. - Graded work turned in late is subject to a 10% penalty per day it is turned in late. Graded Work: Third Hour Assignments: There will be 10 Third Hour Assignments throughout the course. These assignmetns will involve supplemental reading of articles that will be avialable from the Coe Library and responding to critical thinking questons about the topic being investigated. Each of these assignments is worth 10 points for 100 points total and account for 33.3% of your grade. Examinations: There will be two short answer examinaitons during the course. These exams will be worth 50 points each for 100 points total and are worth 33.3% of your grade. Article Summaries: You are required to read two psychology articles from two different peer reviewed journals dealing with motivation and turn in one page summaries of these articles. These are not reflection papers. They are brief summaries of the research article. The papers should include the author, article title, journal, and publication date. A good source for these article is the Coe Library. Students could use either a printed article from a peer reviewed journal in the library’s holdings or one of the library’s electronic databases. Please note Psychology Today is not a peer reviewed journal. These reviews are worth 20 points each and account for 13.3% of your grade. Review and Reflection Paper: You will write a Review and Reflection Paper involving a motivation concept or theory of your choosing. The paper should be between 1500 and 2000 words and follow APA format. It should have an introduction section with a literature review including at least 12 scholarly peer reviewed references. You may use the articles from your two article summaries as references for this paper. Your paper should also have a summary section that includes your reflections about the past research on your chosen concept or theory and your thoughts on future research in this area. Before starting this project you need to have your topic approved. This paper is worth 60 points and accounts for 20% of your grade. Academic Honesty: All students are required to do independent original work. As outlined in UW Regulation 6-802, plagiarism (copying the work of other authors or fellow students), cheating on exams or assignments, or other acts of dishonesty will be grounds for failure on a particular assignment, an F grade for the course, and/or expulsion from the University. There is a well-defined procedure to judge cases of academic dishonesty and serious penalties may be assessed. Students should be aware that software can be used to detect plagiarism, and the instructor can „Google“ and find Wiki articles just as well as anyone else.
