Ethnic Studies (major hours: 33 / minor hours: 18)
Ethnic Studies can help you gain a greater awareness of racism, racial discrimination,
and intolerance, which the American Psychological Association (APA) finds detrimental
to living and functioning in a culturally diverse society. They recognize that “both active
racism and passive acceptance of race-based privilege disrupt the mental health and
psychological functioning of both victims and perpetrators of racial injustice.”
Because the APA recognizes the detrimental effects of race and racism on individuals, they also promote
cultural competence among its members and providers. The APA’s Board of Ethnic Minority Affairs established
a Task Force on the Delivery of Services to Ethnic Minority Populations in 1988 in response to the increased
awareness about psychological service needs associated with ethnic and cultural diversity. The populations of
concern include, but are not limited to the following groups: American Indians/Alaska Natives, Asian
Americans, and Hispanics/Latin@s.
Ethnic Studies courses provide students with the sociocultural framework necessary for (1) recognizing
diversity, (2) understanding the role that culture and race play in the sociopsychological and economic
development of diverse populations, (3) understanding the socioeconomic and political factors that
significantly impact the psychosocial, political, economic development of diverse groups, and (4) helping
clients understand/maintain/resolve their own identity.
