History (major hours: 39) AND Ethnic Studies (major hours: 33 / minor hours: 18) Like History, Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary program that examines anthropology, geography, economics, philosophy, political theory, religion, art, and literature in the development and function of society. However, history examines these areas through a very different lens than does Ethnic Studies. Ethnic Studies focuses on the contributions of ethnic and racial groups to the United States. It examines historical events: how history is written, who gets to write it, and whose stories are validated; and the narratives that get told. It examines history with a more critical look at how race has shaped events, how the race and class of the history writer influences how the story is told, and how race influences the way later generations will read and interpret events from the past. Ethnic Studies faculty specialize in topics similar to those in History: “politics, . . . warfare, and intellectual life as well as gender and women's history, medicine and science, colonialism and intercultural contact, religious expression and practices, and environmental history.” Like History, Ethnic Studies prepares students for careers in university and college teaching and research, primary and secondary education, law, government, public service, journalism, libraries and museums, international business, and medicine. Additionally, Ethnic Studies prepares students for understanding the role that culture and race play in history, understanding the historical factors that have impacted the development of diverse groups, and helping diverse students realize and celebrate the contributions the contributions their ancestors have made to United States development.
