Film & Media Arts

Film & Media Arts (major hours: 54-56)
AND
Ethnic Studies (major hours: 33 / minor hours: 18)
Ethnic Studies courses contribute to a critical analysis of disciplines in the Fine Arts,
including Film & Media Arts. Until the 1960s there were no courses reflecting the art
and culture of racialized groups. Ethnic Studies provides a critical foundation for
students, because Ethnic Studies courses provide a social, historical, and political
context for the film and media that racialized groups create in order to reflect their
lived experiences and to see themselves on screen and film.
Film & Media Arts majors will learn how the lack of racial diversity in media organizations impact what we see
onscreen as well as the bottom line. As a result, several film & media arts organizations now promote projects
that advance diversity in the media. For example, the national Association of Film & Digital Media Artists’
Mission Statement includes a declaration of their efforts at “cultivating diversity and breaking down the
barriers of race, culture, age, and gender for the good of the individual and society.”
As a Film & Media Arts major, students are allowed 15 hours of allied credits. Consider earning an Ethnic
Studies minor with your allied hours! Our program offers courses that introduce you to the lives and histories
of racialized groups in the United States. Supplement your knowledge by learning how to write for and appeal
to the increasingly diverse population of the United States, a skill that every student will need to be successful
in the future. By 2050, Census 2010 figures predict that the United States will be a minority majority nation, so
businesses and organizations are looking for workers who are comfortable and familiar with diversity.
