Communication (major hours: 42) AND Ethnic Studies (major hours: 33 / minor hours: 18) Like Ethnic Studies, Communication is interdisciplinary and includes inquiry by social scientists, humanists, and critical and cultural studies scholars. Moreover, both majors prepare students for several career paths, because both focus on how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts, cultures, channels, and media. Communication offers three sequences in which Ethnic Studies will give you an edge in the job market no matter which sequence you choose--Strategic Communication, Journalism, or Communication Studies. As our world becomes smaller and more interconnected, it is more likely that you will encounter people from other cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Whether you work in a large international organization, a work team or small group, or are in a college classroom, communicating with others who have backgrounds different from your own is unavoidable. Therefore, it is important to develop an understanding and awareness of cultural values, ethnocentrism, and intercultural communication competence. The National Communication Association “has identified cultural competence as a significant skill necessary for addressing the ability to speak to “divergent norms, varying communicative expectations, and the languages of various stakeholder groups” in order to avoid “communication practices conflicting with each other, negating organizational goals and producing unintended consequences.” It is essential to cultivate comprehension and mindfulness of cultural values and intercultural communication competence, and Ethnic Studies prepares students for this.
