Ethnic Studies has profoundly influenced all of the majors in the College of Social and
Behavioral Science, including Geography. Human or Cultural Geography bridges the
social sciences and the natural sciences by focusing on the patterns and processes that
shape human’s interaction with their built and natural environments.
Like Ethnic Studies, Human Geography is interdisciplinary and encompasses several areas, including gender,
urban spaces, race, law, different economic and governmental structures, art, music, and other cultural
aspects that explain how societies organize themselves and function. Geography foregrounds the cultural
landscapes that societies create, and Ethnic Studies helps Geography students uncover the cultural, racial,
gendered, and political landscapes that developed out of the geographical spaces in which people live.
Double majoring in Ethnic Studies and Geography helps students analyze the evolving relationship between
people and places. Ethnic Studies complements Geography’s examination of segregation, urban gentrification,
redlining and housing policies, the suburbanization of America, white flight, the way the body is constructed by
and in space. Ethnic Studies enhances students’ ability to study space in relation to race, gender, and disability.
Double majoring prepares students for several careers: urban planning, travel and tourism, environmental
protection and management, or development specialist in national/international non-government or
government organizations.
