EMERGENCY RESPONSE AT NARAYANA MULTISPECIALITY HOSPITAL SAVES LIFE OF PREGNANT LADY AND THE BABY AFTER MAJOR ROAD ACCIDENT Mysore, July 9, 2014: A 24-year-old pregnant woman, met with a major road accident and sustained injuries from head to chest region, was brought in an emergency condition to Narayana Multispeciality Hospital Mysore. Upon examination by the emergency team at the hospital, she was found to have multiple complications such as fracture in the collar bone, blood clot in the brain and the baby’s condition was fast deteriorating. Thanks to the timely intervention of the doctors, the lady was rushed for a lower segment caesarean section and a female baby was delivered. The baby suffered severe asphyxia problems and since the mother’s condition was also complicated, the team of doctors at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital Mysore, had to put both of them on a ventilator, to monitor their condition. The mother and the baby were under the constant vigil of the experts, which included an obstetrician, neurosurgeon, anaesthesiologist and orthopaedician. Commenting on this case, Dr. Aarathi Santosh – Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Mysore said, “Around 7% of pregnancies are complicated due to a trauma, especially with most events that occur during third-trimester of pregnancy. It is believed that injuries sustained from road accidents account for 70% of life-threatening injuries. Accidents/ Trauma during pregnancy require a co-ordinated multi-professional approach to ensure the best outcome for both mother and baby.” The mother gained consciousness after two days of the surgery and was taken off the ventilator. The child also recovered within a week and was healthy. Both mother and child were discharged from the hospital after ten days.
