COMPLEX HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY PERFORMED ON ‘FOUR FEET’ TALL PATIENT WITH NERVOUS DISORDER Customized cement implants used to correct damaged hip joints Surgery was performed without anesthesia due to short stature Jaipur, May 8, 2014: Narayana Multispeciality Hospital Jaipur recently performed a complex hip replacement surgery on a 50-year-old man who was less than four-feet-tall and suffering with Neurofibromatosis (Genetic disorder of the nervous system which causes tumors to grow on nerves). Due to certain idiopathic (reasons untold) causes, his bone joints were damaged completely, which made Mr. Gowardhan bed-ridden for more than a month. Upon being rejected for ‘Hip Replacement Surgery’ by several hospitals due to his stunted growth, abnormal spine shape and genetic disorder of nerves, he consulted Dr. Neeraj Aggarwal, Consultant - Joint Replacement at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jaipur, where he successfully underwent the surgery. Commenting on the surgery, Dr. Neeraj Agarwal, Consultant Joint Replacement Surgeon at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital Jaipur, said, “Hip replacement surgeries are common but this was a challenging case due to the multiple complexities associated. The implants used for the replacement surgery had to be customized to suit the size of hips and bones.” He added, “Providing spinal anesthesia is a challenge because in such patients spine is not straight which compresses the air carrying capacity of lungs and giving general anesthesia can be dangerous in them. However, this was effectively managed and overcome.” Neurofibromatosis causes stunted growth as this genetic condition results in blockage of arteries. Ears, brain and spine are also deformed. Neurofibromatosis may affect the bones, causing severe pain, as a result of which, Mr. Gowardhan had started experiencing excruciating pain of the joints, thus leading to immobility. The condition not only damaged the spine, but also affected the joints and disturbed the body alignment. The prevalence of this disease is reported to be around one in 3000 births. Dr. Mala Airun – Medical Superintendent at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital Raipur said, “This surgery is a commendable effort by the team of doctors at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital as it showcases the strong pedagogy and clinical excellence, to take up and perform such complex surgeries. We hope this case study will offer hope to many complex surgeries which are being turned down by many, as unmanageable.” The Department of Orthopedics at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital Jaipur is equipped with the latest technologies to offer quality treatment.
