SECTION 748 CURB AND GUTTER 748.01 DESCRIPTION This work consists of constructing curb, gutter, or combination curb and gutter. 748.02 EQUIPMENT Reserved 748.03 MATERIALS Item Concrete Class AE Joint Materials Expansion Joint Material Reinforcing Steel Section 802 826 826.02 C or 826.02 D 836 748.04 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS A. Cast-in-Place Concrete Curb and Gutter 1. General Construct curb and gutter using a slip-form machine or full depth fixed forms. 2. Mixing, Placing, and Finishing Place curb and gutter concrete on a damp base. Consolidate the concrete by vibration. Check the top and face of curbs with a 10 foot straightedge and correct all variations greater than 1/4 inch in 10 feet before the final finish. Finish the exposed surfaces with a moistened wood float and a stiff bristled broom. Correct all honeycombed surfaces by using a mortar composed of one part cement and two parts sand. Remove and replace severely honeycombed areas. If honeycombed areas appear, the Engineer will determine if the areas can be repaired or needs to be removed and replaced. If the Engineer directs repair, patch the honeycombs using a mortar composed of one part cement and two parts sand. Do not use brushes to apply water or use water to facilitate finishing. 3. Curing Apply the final cure within 30 minutes of placing the concrete. Cure all surfaces not protected by forms with a wetted fabric cure or an impervious membrane cure. Changes in curing method require the Engineer’s approval. Cure concrete pavement for a period of at least 72 hours. If weather conditions cause rapid drying of the pavement surface, apply a fine mist or fog spray to the concrete surface for interim curing. Do not apply water with brushes. B. Precast Concrete Curbing 1. Joints All joints shall be formed according to the Plans or as otherwise directed. 1 2. Backfill After the curb has been set to line and grade, fill the spaces in front and back of the curbing and compact to the required elevation. C. Bituminous Curbing 1. Excavation Perform excavation according to Section 748.03 A.2. 2. Base After the uniformly compacting the base, apply a prime coat of the type, grade, and quantity specified. 3. Base Preparation Remove all deleterious materials. Thoroughly dry the surface. Place curb and gutter on a dry surface. Apply the specified tack coat before placing the bituminous mixture. The Engineer may approve the elimination of the tack coat if the base has been freshly primed. 4. Placing Construct bituminous curbing to the required cross section and to a uniform texture, shape, and density. 5. Painting and Sealing Perform sealing and painting only on curbing that is clean and dry, and only under conditions approved by the Engineer. 6. Backfill Fill and compact the spaces in front and back of the curbing to the required elevation with suitable material. 748.05 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT The Engineer will measure completed and in place as specified in Section 109.01 “Measurement of Quantities” and as follows: The Engineer will measure along the front face of the curb and continuously through drainage structures and areas of dropped curb for driveways. 748.06 BASIS OF PAYMENT Pay Item Curb and Gutter Type __ Curb Type __ Valley Gutter Type __ Pay Unit Linear Foot Linear Foot Linear Foot or Square Yard Such payment is full compensation for furnishing all materials, equipment, labor, and incidentals to complete the work as specified. 2 Changes noted in Section 748 Curb and Gutter 748.03 MATERIALS 2008 Spec Items Removed: o Materials for Bituminous Curbing o Curing Materials o Base Materials 408 810 816 748.04 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS A.
