Public Health Warwickshire Regulatory Services Event (26th November 2014) Introduction The Regulatory Services and Public Health joint working event is an annual event to promote closer partnership working and identify joint working opportunities. The most recent event was held on 26th November 2014, and the key topic areas were heath impact assessments: air quality and transport; issues around new legislation re food sales, and outlet locations. A wide range of partners attended the event, including professionals from environmental health, licensing, public health and trading standards. Pledges As part of the presentations regarding air quality and transport, all attendees were asked to make pledges in relation to how they would contribute to reducing congestion and improving air quality in their locality. These are summarised below: Pledges / Suggestions for organisations to take forward Cycling / Active Travel Make step changes i.e. global step challenge / bike scheme Pay bike allowance as well as mileage Safety awareness for car users, to benefit cyclists Secure areas to lock bikes Better promotion of purchase scheme Place time to walk to location on brown road signs ‘Boris’ Bikes Cycle to work day Public Transport / Transport Get public transport providers involved in this conversation Out of district work travel – Pay only public transport costs Car sharing Better located and suitable taxi ranks Pool cars / Subsidy for electronic cars Organisation Development 1 Public conversation Facilitate walking buses Improving environment to encourage cycling and walking (Cycling / Active Travel) Parking fines near schools Dilemma between healthy lifestyle/perk Flexible working arrangements to stagger journey times Car sharing scheme -> Extra car mileage for those with passengers Not providing/charging for workplace parking (with consideration of impact on all surrounding roads) to encourage smarter travel ideas Shower facilities? Home working: IT Infrastructure Management Costs Next Steps We will re-contact participants in 2015 to identify changes that individuals, departments or organisations have made to increase the uptake of Active Travel and reduced car dependency. 2
