AWARENESS
BASIC TRAFFIC RULES
1. Ride on the left lane unless changing lanes to turn right.
2. Bikes, like cars, are obligated to follow all traffic rules. This INCLUDES stopping at red lights and signalling
before lane changing.
3. Riding side-by-side (abreast) is allowed, but discouraged on narrow roads.
4. Do not creep up on vehicles, especially big ones likes trucks – they might not know that you are there.
5. Do not creep up on other cyclists too. Overtake on their right, not on the left.
6. Front and rear lights for bikes are compulsory when travelling after dark, and rear lights MUST be red.
7. Bicycles are not allowed on expressways.
BASIC TRAFFIC RULES
8. Ride according to your skills; practice first off the roads if you are not confident. There’s no shame in learning
to master cornering and bike handling skills at cycling paths or car parks.
9. Ride in a straight line and in a predictable manner. Do not zig-zag or make sudden turns or stops.
10. Do not weave through traffic.
11. Learn to safely give hand signals when turning.
12. Ride on designated cycling track/path
BASIC TRAFFIC RULES
13. Once again, front and rear lights are important in notifying other road users your presence, especially when riding
at night. Make sure your lights are visible and in good working order.
14. Make sure your bike is in good working order too, with working brakes, no loose bolts, and no loose cranks.
15. Wear visible clothing, especially if you’re cycling early in the day before sunrise or late in the night after sunset.
16. Get a pair of shades. Apart from protecting your image when you’re tired, it makes riding much more enjoyable by
protecting your eyes against dust, sand, wind, glare, etc.
17. Do not listen to music with headphones or earpieces while cycling on the road, especially if you are a beginner.
18. Always wear a cycling helmet that is in good working order.
19. Dismount and push the bicycle when approaching traffic junction pedestrian crossing.
