Sustainable Transport (12th October – 6th November) Encouraging staff, students and visitors to think about their travel to the University, make positive steps to reduce the environmental impacts of their journeys and promote the sustainable transport options available. Level 1 (Large Brown or Green Leaves ×4) Each week you will receive an email with information about sustainable travel and related University initiatives. In order to earn your leaf stickers, all we ask is that you circulate this information around the school/department. This can be via email, verbally in team meetings or by placing print outs in prominent places such as the kitchen and notice boards. w/c 12th October – Travel by bus. Changes to the UniBus service and discounts for staff w/c 19th October – The University’s travel survey w/c 26th October – Cycling to work. Discounts for staff, cycle facilities and how to cycle safely w/c 2nd November – Carshare. How to get involved, benefits for staff and the Carshare for Christmas scheme. Level 2 (Small green leaves ×8) Each theme has 8 theme specific actions for your office, department or school to complete. Each action is worth one leaf. 1. At least 1 member of the school/department attended the Green15 launch event in October and visited the Sustainable Transport table 2. The department proactively advises the majority of external visitors and if applicable students, how they can get to meetings, lectures, seminars or conferences via public transport, walking, cycling or car sharing. 3. Management have encouraged staff, and if relevant students, to complete the travel survey either by email or as part of a team meeting. 4. The department/school has produced its own bespoke sustainable travel guide aimed at staff/students/visitors as applicable. This should include information on how to travel sustainably to the department/school’s building(s) on campus 5. The school or department actively promotes cycling. This should include a) providing information to staff on the nearest cycle shelters and shower facilities to the building, b) ensuring staff are aware of the mileage rate for cycling on University business and c) ensuring staff are aware of the staff cycle to work scheme 6. Staff are made aware of and actively encouraged to use the campus shuttle service for visits to and from the Medway campus. This should include a departmental agreement to not pay mileage claims for Canterbury-Medway travel except in exceptional circumstances 7. The University is working in partnership with Kent County Council and a number of other organisations to promote safer cycling. Further information about this and your Green15 action will be sent out during w/c 26th October 8. The department participated in the University's 'Give it a go' day and submitted their sustainable transport story to green15@kent.ac.uk Level 3 (Animal stickers) The final level is about using your initiative and coming up with your own way of raising awareness or taking positive action. It is up to you what you do, it need not be a grand event ,even simple ideas can have positive results. Why don’t you.....
