Monitoring Initiative for Coastal management (SocMon) Project

The intern will work with the partner organization to determine changes in the fisheries-related socio-economic characteristics of the fishing viilages of Colihaut,

Dublanc and Bioche, Dominica. Impacts of present and proposed development were assessed in 2008 with a view to ensuring sustainable use of the resource base of these communities. Since then, there has been no major development in the area but there has been a shift in the local fishery from coastal to off-shore operations as a result of the promotion of the FAD fishery and increase in the numbers of younger fishers to the fishing industry.

 Assist in training ≥ 10 fisheries managers and other stakeholders in SocMon

Caribbean methods

Assist in selection of SocMon core variables for sustained monitoring based on site and case studies

Co-author 1 training workshop report from Dominica activity for participant, institutional memory

Participate in site monitoring (design; data collection, analysis, interpretation; validation; lessons)

Co-author 1 site monitoring plan from Dominica activity for use in adaptive management decisions

Produce 1 training and site monitoring video for promotion of SocMon

Caribbean methods

Populate Global SocMon/SEM-Pasifika online database ( www.socmon.org

) with site data

Co-author 1 oral or poster presentation at 68 th Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries

Qualifications

Share information via the SocMon/SEM-Pasifika Facebook page, SocMonitor etc.

Canadian citizen or permanent resident

Graduate or senior undergraduate student enrolled at Dalhousie

University in good academic and financial standing

Registered in a course for which the student will gain academic credit for the internship placement during the term of the internship

Internship placements will normally occur in the summer term. The duration is 3-6 months.

Financial support for the internship is available.
