Organizational Sketch: On April 8, 1902, the first Academic Hall building burned, destroying the University’s library, initially housed in the principal’s office. During construction of the new Academic Hall, the University re-established the library in 1905, in the Education-Social Science building under the supervision of Robert S. Douglass. After completion of the present Academic Hall in 1906, the library relocated to Academic Hall’s east wing. By 1938, the library’s growing collections prompted the University to construct a new building for the library across from Academic Hall, officially renaming it Kent Library, in honor of Sadie T. Kent, the University’s head librarian from 1910 to 1943. Felix E. Snider became the head librarian in 1943 and supervised the library’s renovation and expansion in 1968. Additional renovations occurred under the leadership of Dr. Sarah Cron in 2006, providing space to encompass new library services, including Instructional Materials, the Information Commons, the Special Collections and Archives department, and the Heather McDougall Greene Multimedia Center.
