TEXTILE COLLECTION FINDING AID Textile Collection, 1830 ‐ 1970 1830‐1970 [bulk: early 1900s] 157 boxes (220 linear ft.) Collection number: TEXTILES.001 ABSTRACT The textile collection housed at the Wistariahurst Museum includes a wide variety of clothing, household linens, decorations, accessories and even clothing for dolls. The collection houses items from the 1830s to 1970s. The collection is made up of donations over the years, starting with the Skinner family’s clothing and household items. All the clothing was either made by Skinner Silks and Satins or worn by a resident of Holyoke, MA. Terms of Access and Use: The collection is open for research. Some restrictions apply. HISTORICAL NOTE From 1850 to 1860, the crinoline dress, or often referred to as “hoop dress,” was in style. The dress featured a “hoop” skirt that the woman would wear under the fabric of the skirt. The hoop was made from steel and extended outwards from her legs. The skirt offered the woman a freedom that wasn’t previously available because previous dresses clung tightly to her legs. Because it often would lift up and expose the woman’s legs, she would wear petticoats under the skirt. The steel frame was lighter then their predecessors and allowed the woman to wear fewer petticoats than the original hoop. Because of the light weight steel, the skirts were frequently being uplifted by winds, causing much humiliation to the woman. The steel was made to allow flexibility which was great for when a woman needed to sit down. But if she didn’t shift her skirts the right way, the entire skirt would lift up into her face. By the mid 1860’s, the hoop skirt was at its largest circumference. During it’s time in the fashion world, it faced much ridicule from men, who published satirical cartoons on the dress. Eventually, the circumference of dresses returned back to the legs and was replaced by the bustle. The 1870’s were the start of a new style that sported a piece of fabric that fastened on the woman’s lower back, giving her the appearance of having a well‐rounded bottom. The term “bustle” was actually considered a vulgar term and was often referred to its French name of “tournure.” The dresses from the 1870’s were made from heavier fabrics such as velvets and heavy satins. The bustle was made of stiffened horsehair and was a popular fashion choice into the 1900’s. Because of the placement of the bustle, it caused women to struggle to sit down. Furniture from this time period is often referred to as uncomfortable and stiff which is blamed on this style of dress. Women wearing the bustle could only Page 1

TEXTILE COLLECTION FINDING AID sit on the edge of the seat, giving them an erect, dignified look. By the 1890’s, the hourglass shape was the new fashion preference. Women would use the corset to bring in their waist and use the fullness on their sleeves and backside (by using the bustle) to achieve an even smaller waist. Pop culture tends to show how easy it is for someone to rip open an unwilling Victorian woman’s dress. Because of the many layers of the bustle‐corset dress, men were actually not able to rip them open. Even she needed help dressing and undressing because of the many hooks and eyes on each of the numerous layers. By 1910, the silhouette changed to what is referred to as the “s” curve. The s‐curve refers to the shape of the woman given from the side view: a high pronounced bust with an equally pronounced backside. From this side view, the woman almost looks like an “s.” To achieve this look, women would use corsets to bring in their waistline. Although many doctors warned about possible dangers in wearing such a confining piece of clothing, the majority of women ignored them. In fact, many girls as young as two years old were wearing the corset. In the mid 1910s, the fashion of clothing allowed for more skin to be shown. The sleeves were raised to three quarters and necklines were lowered, offering the woman a new sense of freedom. During this time, women began to have to wear dusters over their clothing to protect it from unwanted dirt and debris. Cars were becoming more and more popular in America, so women driving around in them often found themselves in need of protection. Often times they would also wear hats, scarves, and gloves for added protection. The showing of more skin continued to be a theme in fashion when the 1920s rolled through. American fashion has always been influenced by European designs. The 1920s was greatly influenced by French designers, one of the most inflectional being Coco Chanel. The tight fitting corset was traded for the chemise and bloomers. The style of the undergarments gave the woman a more boyish figure in attempts to create an almost straight and slim figure. Waistlines were dropped, which vanished the once pronounced hip. Hemlines on skirts continued to slowly rise, and arms were often left bare. The corset underwent new changes during this time; it went from sucking in the waist to flattening the bodice in attempts to create a streamline look. Eventually, the corsets were completely replaced by brassieres which supported the woman’s bosom. The brassieres were the pre‐runners of the modern bra. Men during this time also loosened up. For many years, the style of men’s clothing didn’t stray far from formal suits. But in the 1920s, more men left the formalwear behind and adopted a more relaxed look. Sportswear and other athletic gear were very popular for men. Modern men’s formalwear hasn’t changed much from the 1920s style which offered more of a relaxed version of the once long‐tailed waistcoats. With indoor plumbing on the rise, more women were able to partake in fashion customs. Since they were able to bathe and shave on a more regular basis, their clothing reflects their new found “healthier and cleaner” look. And after World War I, women began to leave the house and participate in activities such as tennis, golf, and bicycling. More women began to attend college and enter the workforce as secretaries. The new activities meant that their clothing also had to offer more freedom in their movement. With hemlines now near the knees, it meant that women were able to dance in a completely new way. They were able to kick up their feet and twist around, which led to the popular dance called the Charleston. The popular “flapper” dress allowed this new movement to be seen with all the fringe and pleats. Hairstyles also significantly changed during this time frame; women began to cut their hair in the short “bob” style in order to fit under specially made hats. Page 2

TEXTILE COLLECTION FINDING AID By the end of the 1920s, the style took another turn and returned to a more feminine look. Just like today, American women from the 20th century were often very influenced by French and other European designs. So when Paris released the more feminine look back to the fashion world, American women followed in suit. Corsets were officially gone by 1930 and with that the flat‐figure was no longer in. Waistlines were once again raised to feature a more natural hip and women began to put more emphasize on pronouncing their bosoms using the brassieres. SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION The textile collection is a compilation of William Skinner’s silk and satin clothing that has been donated to the Wistariahurst Museum. The textiles included in the collection must be either made of the William Skinner silks and fabrics, or must be worn by a person who resided in Holyoke, MA. The textile collection consists primarily of material dating from 1830s to 1970s, with the bulk in the early 1900’s. The collection includes women’s clothing, wedding attire, accessories, children’s clothing, men’s clothing, doll’s clothing, fabrics and linens, and household objects. The first part of the collection is a large assortment of women’s dresses and suits. The dresses are sorted into specific eras from which they were either specified as made or worn. The Early Victorian Era will include garments from 1830s to 1850s. The Mid Victorian Era will include dresses from 1860s to 1880s, and the Late Victorian Era will be a group from 1890s to 1900s. The 20th century did not have one specific name for their eras, as at this time there were many different styles throughout the world and often times many different styles occurring at the same time. There are the Roaring Twenties, Art Deco, Hollywood Glamour and much more, too many different styles to pick the most influential. Also, it is difficult to say what styles some of the garments would have been originally classified as. So the rest of the dresses are categorized by either manufactured year or when it was worn. There is a list of garments with no assigned year because it would be difficult to accurately determine a time; thus, instead of mistakenly assigning a wrong year to these garments, they have been left under “unknown.” This method is also used for the series of Wedding Attire and Women’s Skirts. Materials pertaining to the category “women’s clothing” were separated into individual series as the collection has a large assortment of women’s clothing. Then each series, such as dresses and footwear, were broken down into subseries based on year or category. This method is used throughout the container list, although the women’s clothing remains the only multi‐series area. Some items were worn together but are cataloged separately. If an item was possibly worn with another item, there will be a note of “see also” with the item’s cataloged number and series name. The subseries are organized alphabetically, and then each item is organized chronologically by item number. The location numbers read as follows: MH stands for Main House and CH stands for Carriage House. The number reads: Range : Bank : Drawer or Shelf : Box. Some items are located in the main house on 2nd floor for display, and some are in a cedar closet on the 2nd floor (cdr clst). Some are located in the carriage house on a hanger, which would read R3 hng, or Range 3 hanger. Page 3
