Biology Acid/Base Hunt Name____________________________________ Per_______________ 1. Take out your Labquest and turn on (button on the top left) *NOTE: pH SENSOR MUST ALWAYS BE STANDING UP*. Plug the pH sensor into channel 1, on the top face of the lab quest. 2. You and your partner will go around the room and will use the pH sensors to take the pH of the 16 marked substances a. The pH sensor should be in the buffer at all times unless it is testing a substance. b. Take the pH sensor out of the buffer and give it a quick rinse with the distilled water spray and waste beaker at each table. The sensor is the little round bulb at the tip, so make sure you wash that part implicitly. c. Place the pH sensor in the unmarked solution. Let it sit for 10-20 seconds. Record the average pH detected in the column marked “pH Detected.” d. Give the pH sensor another rinse into the waste beaker before placing in a beaker or in the buffer. *NOTE: ALWAYS RINSE YOUR pH SENSOR IN DISTILLIED WATER BEFORE AND AFTER TESTING FOR A pH.* 3. Use the pH list below to compare your pH’s with the correct ones. Try to match substances with their labels based on their pH. At the end of the period, the teacher will give you the key to compare with your answers. pH Detected Substance Guess Answer Key pH Detected A B C D E F G H Substance Guess Answer Key I J K L M N O P Solution pH Solution pH Aspirin 3.2 Milk 6.3 Baking Soda 8.5 Milk of Magnesia 8.0 Bleach 12.0 Saliva 6.0 Coca Cola 3.0 Tomato Juice 4.6 Dishwasher Soap 9.4 Toothpaste 9.0 Drano 12.9 Tums 6.5 Gatorade 3.5 Vinegar 2.5 Lemon Juice 2.8 Water 7.0 To clean up and be allowed to leave 1.
