Greetings Scholars,
Welcome to a new,
exciting, and challenging
year at Byram Middle
School! We will cover a
tremendous amount of
material this year;
therefore, it is extremely
important for you to keep
up with the subject matter
by reviewing and studying
on a nightly basis. Your
weekly assignments and
homework assignments will
be posted on the board, as
well as the classroom
website and are expected
to be included in your class
notebook.
The essential
goal of this Math class is to
prepare you for high
school, aid you in
preparing for your state
test, and assist you in
becoming effective
learners and leaders.
I look forward to a fun year
of learning with you!

Coach Prevost’s Procedures &
Expectations
Classroom
o Be prompt: report to class on time; however, if you are tardy, enter class quietly and put your excuse
or reason on my desk. Then, go directly to your assigned seat.
o End of class dismissal: The bell does not dismiss you; I do. Remain in your seat until the teacher has
verbally dismissed class.
o Homework: Have your homework on your desk while you are working on your bell ringer. Homework
turned in after the bell ringer is considered late. Homework done during bell ringer time is
considered late.
o Keep book bags and purses off of the desktop. Put them on the back of your desk or underneath your
desk. (Ladies, please refrain from sitting your purses on your laps.)
o Quietly pass papers to the first person on each row (from hand to hand). Wait patiently for the
teacher or the assigned student to collect them.
o When you finish assignments early, you may read, get on the computer (get permission first), or work
on an Math project. Sleeping, talking, or being unproductive is not an option.
o Returning to task after interruptions: If an interruption occurs while we are working, return your
attention to your assignment immediately without talking or disrupting class further.
o When a school-wide announcement is made, show respect by being quiet and listening to the
announcement.
o If you have to throw something away, you have two options: I will pick it up and throw it away as I
move about the room, or you may throw it away as you exit class.
o When visitors are in the classroom, be quiet and remain on task, unless you have permission to speak.
**Follow all behavior responsibility guidelines in the student handbook, as well.

Course Syllabus
In Compacted Mathematics Grade 8 (with Algebra I), a one-credit
course, instruction should focus on three critical areas from Grade 8: (1)
formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including
modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving
linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept
of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; and
(3) analyzing two-and three-dimensional space and figures using distance,
angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the
Pythagorean Theorem.
In addition to the Grade 8 material, instruction will focus on five critical
areas: (1) analyze and explain the process of solving equations and
inequalities: (2) learn function notation and develop the concepts of domain
and range; (3) use regression techniques; (4) create quadratic and
exponential expressions; and (5) select from among these functions to
model phenomena.
