Converting Waste Products into Green Environmental Design for Children. 1. Statement of the Problem In developing countries like Nepal, solid wastes are not managed properly. Plastic bottles and polyethene bags predominate the solid wastes. Due to weak policy regulation and lack of awareness among people, people are throwing the waste products everywhere randomly. We can see the bottles of coke, mineral water and beverages being thrown on the both sides of highways in Nepal. My district Sindhuli is no more different from this This phenomenon is deteriorating the beauty of the environment making ugly. That is one problem while there is another problem regarding monotonous behavior in children. Parents in lack of sufficient money, can not buy entertainment media so that their children can play with. Similarly there is not sufficient lands which can be utilized as play station of children. Thus my project focuses on addressing these two problems from my own level in my district Sindhuli of Nepal. 2. Earth Charter Principles This project follows two principles of the Earth Charter International. As it focuses on conserving integrity of the environment and also focuses on preserving humanity in developing societies, principles 2 and 1 are followed consequently. 3. Target Groups The project is multi-dimensional. It first addresses the environemtal problem so that human need of children for enjoyment can be satisfied. The target groups are also divided on two categories. One group is that group of people, who are feeling uneasy with the haphazard throwing of children. The aim is to clear the solid wastes and make roads look clean for better health of people. Similarly the other is children who are not having access to sources of entertainment and living monotonously. The objective is to make attractive shapes like vehicles, animals, hills and others from solid wastes like plastic bottles and stopper of such bottles. Figure: Plastic bottles and children. 4. Project Plan 4.a. Purpose Being a social as well as environmental activist, I am very much concerned about problems in both sectors. Although my district is very beautiful, but haphazard throwing of plastic bottles and polyethene bags have added problem making environment ugly. While in other hand there are many children whose mental condition can be improved by providing entertainment from artificial shapes of animals, vehicles made from those wastes, which children can play with. Therefore I want to do this project both for betterment of the environment and poor children. 4. b Mission: The short term goals of the project are: To make roads clean from solid wastes i.e. plastic bottles, glass bottles, polyethene bags. To collect those objects in Panitanki village in headquarter of Sindhuli district. To design shapes of animals and vehicles from those goods and to open those stuffs for children to play with. To make children very active in extra-curricular activities. 4. c Vision. The long term goals of the project are: To raise awareness about solid waste management in local people of Sindhuli District. To establish a center focusing on waste management, sculpture center and playing station focusing on children. To recycle the wastes and utilize in making such children attracting products. 4.d. Objectives. The project starts with campaigning about solid waste management for cleaner roads and beautiful scenes. The campaigning will include all stakeholders of the society i.e. leaders, general people and academicians. The campaigning for clearing the roads and other places will be done frequently and will include proper collection of household solid wastages for recycling process. Similarly it will also involve partnership with I/N /GOs so that they can help us in proper collection of such wastes. 4. e. Plan of Implementation My project initiates from December 2nd, 2012. It will almost take 6 months to complete first phase of the plan i.e. design for poor children attracting from solid wastages. It will start with help of all stakeholders of societies. It will start simultaneously with campaign for awareness about wastage management. Local organizations like Peace for Development, Development, Scholarships for Bright Future and District development committee of Sindhuli have vowed to help us financially.
