Theology: Morality Spring 2012 Mr. Fitzpatrick Room 101 or Theology Office efitzpatrick@walsingham.org Welcome to Morality. In this class, we will explore the ideas of moral decision making, and your own decision making process. I will make every attempt to make the course relevant to you, as we examine your personal decision making in life events and situations that you may find yourself. We also will examine many national issues such as Euthanasia, stem cell research, and life issues. Below is a brief explanation of the course standards that we will follow as well as expectations for the course. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Course Standards *Taken from 2011-2012 Course Catalog At a time when technology, media and world events cause us to experience rapid change, one needs to take the opportunity to be reflective and make good life choices. Students will explore a process of making moral decisions, identify the stages of moral growth/development and examine current moral subjects such as: abortion, stem cell research, capital punishment, etc. Student Expectations Homework a. Homework will be assigned on a regular basis. This will include reading assignments which are expected to be completed b. Homework will be posted online and announced in class c. Late Homework will be penalized Assessments a. Journals i. Your homework will be given in the form of a journal questions that pertain to the class work. You are expected to write an honest, well-thought out answer to the question that is at least 1 page in length. b. Class Reflections i. In class, we will have multiple reflections especially on our readings. In the third quarter, we will use the book to guide our discussions and your reflections and in the Fourth quarter we will have more of a debate format. c. Major Projects i. Throughout the course, various projects will be conducted based on the material being covered in class. There will be one major project per quarter. Conduct and Class Participation d. Participation is encouraged and expected in class. i. The class will be more engaging and enjoyable for everyone if you participate. We are talking about real-life, current issues so please be ready to share. e. Students are also expected to act in a Christian manner when interacting with one another especially when speaking in class. We all will not agree all the time, but we will treat each other with respect. Grade Breakdown Below is the breakdown for how each grade is assigned to reach the final grade. o Project 25% o Class Reflections 25% o Homework 25% o Class Participation 25 % Academic Honesty Plagiarism or cheating will not be tolerated and will result in a ZERO. Extra Credit can be earned only if asked. All assignments must be up to date in order to receive extra credit Absences: If you miss class, you are responsible for what you miss and for asking me for the assignment. It is your responsibility to make sure you have any assignments you might miss due to athletic events, field trips, or rehearsals. If you miss the due date for an assignment because of an excused absence, you must submit the assignment on the day you return to school. I reserve the right to modify this rule when it applies to current events or projects. These may be submitted via email, so there are very few instances in which a paper cannot be turned in on time, even if you aren’t able to physically hand the paper to me. Need help?
