Grade 2 Reading and Homework Guidelines Dear Parents, In order to gain confidence and fluency in reading, we are requiring your child to read at least fifteen minutes every day at home with an adult. We have been working with the children to choose good fit books for their reading and hope that they will be able to choose ‘good fit books’ from their home library. If you need levelled readers please just ask and we will be more than happy to help. Please take time to read to your child, with one another and listen to them read independently. Here are some suggestions to help your child when they are having difficulty reading independently * Point to each word to increase accuracy and smooth reading * Chunk difficult/unknown words * Ask what would make sense in that sentence * Use picture clues * Tell andthe continue reading. Ask your them childthe to word retell story after readinga good retell should identify who, when, where in the story. Ask some ‘why do you think’ questions to help develop their inferential comprehension. Oxford words- It is expected that by the end of Grade 2 your child will be able to read 307 Oxford words and spell 200 words on the Oxford word list. Please ask your classroom teacher should you need a copy of the list. Maths- Our maths homework is based on the concepts taught during the previous week. Correct it together and discuss any difficulties and celebrate their growing maths ability. Spelling- Your child will have either Oxford words for their spelling list or phonic based lists. Children need to practise their words at least 3 times during their week by completing the Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check activity in their book.
