Telecoms Operation Technician

Position
To support the delivery of the services and functions carried out by the Northern Powergrid
Telecommunication operations team.
Key Responsibilities
Dimensions of the role
 Assist in ensuring delivery of the maintenance and incident functions within telecoms
operations
 Participating in the Telecommunications out of hour’s standby provision
 Provide support including out of hours to major incident declarations
Principal accountabilities
 Assisting in the delivery of the telecommunications maintenance programme and the
incident restoration function primarily in the Yorkshire/ North Lincolnshire area.
Decision making and use of judgement
 The Telecoms Operations Technician will have available network management tools
and the incident reporting systems, and will be required to make judgement on fault
priorities and restoration strategy.
Essential internal and external working relationships
 Within the Telecoms operations team
 With other ICT Teams
 With key internal business units
 With third party partners eg hardware vendors, delivery partners
Key Competencies





A proven technical background in the delivery of medium scale telecom projects,
preferably IP data networking biased.
Conversant in structured wiring systems
Conversant in support of IP Data Network systems including wireless, VOIP and Firewall
technologies
Conversant with incident and change processes
Conversant on first and second line support of IP data network and VOIP systems
incidents and changes
Qualifications & Attributes
Essential Qualifications and Experience



Possess National Qualification Framework (NQF) - Level 2 (or equivalent) in a relevant
engineering based subject
Demonstrable knowledge of IP data network system.
A proven technical background and experience in the delivery of small scale telecom
projects, incident and change management.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience



ITIL Foundation
At least two years’ experience working with IP data network systems including wifi
systems, firewalls and VOIP systems
High level understanding of other telecommunication systems, microwave radio, UHF
and VHF radio and telemetry systems
