6th Grade Health Syllabus Mr. Toby Kemper Health is a quarter-long course that is required for all 6th graders. The textbook used for this course is Glencoe: Teen Health. This course will consist of 6 Units that will cover the following information: 1. Body Type/Image Unit- to include nutrition, eating disorders, respect, and selfesteem 2. Body Systems Unit- to include the respiratory, circulatory, skeletal, and muscular systems 3. Disease Prevention Unit- to include communicable and non-communicable diseases including HIV/AIDS 4. Human Sexuality Unit- to include the male and female reproductive systems, puberty, chromosomes, heredity, etc. 5. Tobacco and Drug Unit- to include alcohol, marijuana, OTC drugs, illegal drugs, decision making, advertising, and refusal skills 6. Self Esteem and Decision Making GRADING DAILY ASSIGNMENTS AND HOMEWORK (40%) 1. Late work: Late assignments that are less then or equal to 2 days late will be graded and then marked down 50%. Completed assignments handed in after 2 days will be given a zero in the grade book. All late work must be labeled LATE with the original DATE DUE and handed into the LATE box in order to receive any credit. 2. Absent work: In the case of an excused absence, you will have one school day for every day you are gone to make up the work. For example, if you are gone on Monday, you get your missed assignments on Tuesday, and hand them in on Wednesday. In the case of an extended absence, each student will be given due dates depending on the length of their absence. Work missed during an unexcused absence will not be accepted for credit. All absent work must be labeled ABSENT with the DATE you were gone and placed in the ABSENT box. If you are absent on the day of a test, you must speak to me the day you return to set up a time to make it up. 3. A spiral notebook is required for this class. You must also have a 3 ring binder, that has a Health section, or similar organization system in place. TESTS AND QUIZZES (30%) 1. Information will be from class discussion, readings, lectures and videos. BEHAVIOR AND PARTICIPATION (30%) 1. Contributing to class discussions is crucial to the success of this class. We will cover some controversial and personal topics and sharing thoughts and experiences will make the subject matter more meaningful for everyone. Students will receive checks for participation and will be graded accordingly. 2. Students will lose points when class expectations (see below) are not being followed and/or behavior is affecting the learning of others. GRADING SCALE Your grade will be based on a percentage of points earned in the above categories. The Kingston Middle School grading policy will be in effect. CLASSROOM PROCEDURES AND EXPECTATIONS 1. Be in your assigned seat, working on the bell activity when the bell rings. 2. Be prepared for class (notebook, paper, pen or pencil). You will need a notebook to leave in the classroom to use at the beginning of the period every day. 3. No food or drink in class. 4. Students must be in assigned seat before they are excused at the end of the period (no standing at the door). 5. Eliminate disruptions – take care of sharpening pencils, disposing of trash and other non-urgent events during appropriate times (not while others are speaking). 6. Respect and courtesy will be shown to all students, teachers, and guests at all times. 7.
