INNOVATIVE DECENTRALIZED WASTEWATER TREATMENT METHODS AND NUTRIENT RECOVERY
According to the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (91/271), the environment should be protected from municipal and agro-industrial wastewaters.
Although important steps have been made by all EU countries to implement Directive 91/271, several issues remain of concern (7th Report on the Implementation of
91/271):
• Point source pollution still effects 22% of EU water bodies.
• Eutrophication remains a major threat in c. 30% of water bodies in 17 Member States.
• Only 39% of wastewaters in the EU-12 Member States receive appropriate secondary treatment.
• Municipal wastewater treatment is only applied in towns and cities with populations over 2,000 people.
• Until 2005, total nitrogen and total phosphorus loads in wastewaters decreased by only 9% and 15%, respectively.
Therefore there is a significant gap in wastewater treatment of remote small villages (below 2000 inhabitants) and agro-industries, which are scattered in rural regions
and most often situated adjacent to water bodies. Until today, wastewaters deriving from these points are either not treated at all or they are treated by compact
treatment systems, which only remove their organic load. Therefore, innovative wastewater treatment methods should be developed in order to fulfill the following
requirements:
• Successful removal of organic and nutrient loads
• Treatment of wastewaters with varying hydraulic and organic loads
• Simple operation without needing specialized personnel
• Low capital and operational cost.
The proposed project aims to develop integrated solutions for the simultaneous treatment of decentralized wastewater bodies and nutrient recovery. Biological trickling
filters, constructed wetlands (CWs), micro-algae, and innovative absorption materials will fulfill these requirements. To this end different processes will be developed
and tested, such as:
• A combination of an innovative constructed wetland and a post-treatment stage of purification and nutrient recovery by micro-algae. As support media for the
constructed wetland plastic porous media will be used. Thus, high specific area will be provided for biofilm development at the root system of the plants while
increased porosity that will be obtained will prevent pore clogging. This treatment system will provide high removal efficiencies of organic loads in reduced space
requirements. The effluent produced from this stage will then be purified in a reactor containing micro-algae, which will further reduce nutrient loads. Algal produced
biomass will be collected and high added value materials, for example lipids and proteins, will be recovered and exploited.
• A constructed wetland with specific support media, such as metallurgic by-products (i.e. alum sludge, bauxite dust) or other innovative materials such as BephosTM
in order to recover nitrogen and phosphorus. After saturation these media will be replaced and co-composted at proper ratios together with other agro-industrial wastes,
such as olive leaves and pomace, to produce compost that will meet EU regulations for organic farming.
• A double-layered trickling filter. The upper layer will be packed with plastic support for organic carbon removal, while the lower layer will be packed with
innovative absorptive materials like BephosTM for nutrient recovery. The latter layer after saturation will be removed and will be used as soil amendment.
Partner Profile
1. Research teams that work on:
-decentralized wastewater treatment systems.
-micro-algae cultures for wastewater purification and production of high added value materials.
-constructed wetlands
-specialize on compost characterization and field evaluation
-absorptive materials
-nutrient recovery from wastewater
2. Companies that specialize on wastewater treatment
3. End-users (e.g., wastewater treatment companies, agro-industries)

Follow Mihalis Iraklis
Mihalis Iraklis PanagiotidisProfessor of Nutrition & Toxicology and Department Head of Human Health, Heriot Watt University, School of Life Sciences
We are a multidisciplinary team of academics based at Heriot Watt University aiming to develop a proposal in the area of “Sustainable eco-innovation towards zero
waste economy in the built environment”. In general, the construction and demolition (C&D) sector is the largest contributor of waste globally and, in the UK alone, as
it is responsible for generating 120 million tonnes of waste every year. In addition, given the global resource constraints, recovery and re-use of raw C&D waste
materials (minerals, metals and organic materials) are increasingly emerging as factors of utmost importance in providing the best overall environmental, economic
and societal outcomes. The vision of this project will be to foster economically and environmentally sustainable solutions for the re-use of raw materials in the built
environment. The strategies we will bring to fore underpin cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness by minimising the need for bulk waste/material shipment and
promoting near-zero waste in the C&D sector. This is achieved by delivering eco-innovation for the on-site closed-loop re-processing of C&D waste into new building
materials. For these reasons, a range of R&D and international co-operation activities pertaining to the theme of re-using mineral resources from C&D waste in the
built environment will be planned and structured around a case study involving earth construction. Thus, we would like to bring together a cross-disciplinary
consortium that will address the proposed eco-technology in its entirety, including: (1) resolving engineering challenges, (2) ensuring public and on-site health and
safety issues, (3) investigating societal, psychological and marketing aspects and (4) delivering viable construction management, business and regulatory models.
Ultimately, our proposal will aim to (i) assimilate best practices and disseminate latest advances in C&D waste re-use to academic industrial and
governmental/regulatory bodies, (ii) act as a point of reference in promoting the establishment of standards and legislation for the re-use of recycled C&D waste into
new building materials and processes and (iii) establish an international pool of cross-trained pioneers with the necessary interdisciplinary expertise and global
perspective required to lead the adoption of sustainable eco-innovation in the built environment globally. If such opportunity is of interest to you, I would greatly
appreciate letting me know as to how would your group and/or Company be able to contributing in this project. You can contact me directly at

Transport Open Data - Partner search for MG7.1 - Looking for public and private
transport operators
Follow Marcos
Marcos SacristánHead of International R&D at Treelogic
Hello everyone.
We are currently working on a proposal towards the next Transport call. Specifically we are considering topic MG-7.1 (Connectivity and information sharing for
intelligent mobility), addressing Transport Open Data.
In short, we are bringing together different stakeholders and operators in the field of transport, in order to improve and maximise the availability and (crossborder/cross-system) interoperability of transport data, fostering open data policy, definition and monitoring of data quality, while considering data security and
integrity related challenges to enable an open market for mobility as a service.
The core scientific and technical partners are onboard, as well as standardization bodies and authorities in the field. We are now bringing together also public and
private transport operators (data providers) and stakeholders from the whole value chain in different EU countries: public and private operators managing airlines,
railway, bus, boat/ferry, taxi operators, etc. So this is in principle the type of partners we are open to bring in.
Further details of the call and topic are available at:
http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/opportunities/h2020/topics/2641-mg-7.1-2014.html
Should you are willing to take part, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am looking forward to a fruitful cooperation.

Ventilated façades are very suitable for refurbisment of buildings. In order to improve the efficiency of this system we have developed a system to recover the heat
coming from the ventilated channel to heat the building in different ways. This will be an active system depending on the heat coming from the façade. Moreover we
have developed a module for EnergyPlus that we can integrate in the evaluation of the performance of the building this new active ventilated façades and other new
configurations of the façades.
