Advanced Placement & Latin III Honors Syllabus, 2014-2015 Mrs. Aurelia Ogles 352-787-5047, ext. 7038, please call 3rd period (9:20AM) or after school e-mail: OglesA@lake.k12.fl.us Course Description: We will review Latin I and II using Jenney’s First Year Latin and various other Latin grammar texts. Then we will translate original works of Caesar and Virgil required by the AP Syllabus. We will also address the major themes outlined in the AP Course Description. Students will have a complete schedule of translations due so that even when they are absent they will know the assignments. We cannot deviate from this schedule since all lines and reviews must be completed by the date of the AP Exam in May. Ergo, the student is responsible for the translations of the day, EVEN IF ABSENT. If absent on the day of a scheduled quiz or test, the student must plan on taking it after school the day he/she returns to school. Grades are calculated in the following manner: Classwork and Translations 30%, Quizzes and Tests 70% Projects, The first optional major project is due December 5. Students may choose any category from the following:. models, textiles, drawings, paintings, 2-D art (Mosaics, wood burning, stained glass), 3-D Art (pottery/sculpture), modern myth, illustrated writing; photography; charts, maps, games, misc.. Those enrolled in an art class are encouraged to do one in conjunction with that class. The subject matter must fall between the dates of 753 BC and 450 AD and must reflect ancient Roman, Greek or Egyptian culture. Students may also choose from several oral categories (original declamation or oration; dramatic readings chosen by the National Junior Classical League) and costumes (chosen by the NJCL – Boys: Phaethon, Girls: Circe, Couples: Aphrodite and Hephaestus). Latin Regional Competition is on Saturday, January 31, 2015, hosted by Oak Hall School in Gainesville. All Latin students must attend and compete. Only school-related conflicts will be excused. Cost is $35. covering bus, registration, breakfast snack, and lunch. Money due in December 5. There will be a fall fundraiser to help with these and other field trip expenses. Mrs. Ogles’ Classy Rules: 1. Be On Time: arrive before the tardy bell rings. If a student arrives after the tardy bell, they must bring a pass to enter the room. 2. Be Prepared to Work: have homework, textbooks, paper, pen/pencil 3. Be Courteous: pay attention, work quietly, don’t disturb others 4. Be sure to Keep Your Area Clean: pick up your paper & other possessions; don’t chew gum or eat or drink during class. Consequences for Un-Classy Behavior 1st time: Warning 2nd time: Call parent 3rd time: Detention 4th time: Referral to Administrator Level II & above infractions: Automatic referral to Administrator Optional activities: Leesburg High’s Latin Club is part of the Florida Junior Classical League and the National Junior Classical League, the largest student organization in the world. Activities include meetings, activities, and field trips. A) Field Trips: Ringling Museum & Tampa Museum of Art; Winter Park Art; Salvadore Dali, Chuhuly Exhibit, Clayworks. B) FJCL State Competition in Orlando, April 9-11,2015, for the top 25 winners from Regionals. C) National Competition: July 25-Aug. 1, 2015 at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Dues for the Latin Club are $10. which includes dues for the Florida Junior Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. Make checks payable to Leesburg High School and note JCL Club dues. Dues are due by Friday, September 1. We are designing new club shirts this year, so info. to come.
