Grades are calculated from the following: Classwork/Homework/Open Notebook Quizzes is 30% of the grade, Quizzes/Tests/Projects are 70% of the grade Notebooks: Students are to keep a folder with clasps or a 3-ring binder for notes and work, and pockets for keeping handouts, returned quizzes and tests. Textbooks: Cambridge Units 1 & 2; D’Aulairres Mythology; Edith Hamilton’s Mythology; Our textbooks were originally developed in Great Britain using the Reading Communicative Method rather than the Grammar Method. This Reading Method is a more natural method for learning language with the goal of students mastering the language more effectively. Two major objectives are to teach comprehension of Latin through practice in reading it, and to develop through these readings the students’ understanding of the social and political history of the Romans, especially during the first century A.D. We still study grammar, vocabulary derivatives, but integrated with the readings rather than as separate abstract drills and exercises. Projects, The first major project is due December 3. Students may choose any category from the following:. models, textiles, drawings, paintings, 2-D art (Mosaics, wood burning, stained glass), 3-D Art (pottery/sculpture), modern myth, illustrated writing; photography; charts, maps, games, misc.. Those enrolled in an art class are encouraged to do one in conjunction with that class. The subject matter must fall between the dates of 753 BC and 450 AD and must reflect ancient Roman, Greek or Egyptian culture. Students may also choose from several oral categories (original declamation or oration; dramatic readings chosen by the National Junior Classical League) and costumes (chosen by the NJCL – Boys: Acteon; Girls: Allecto Couples: Agamemnon & Clytemnestra) Regional Competitions are tentatively scheduled at Oak Hall School in Gainesville Saturday, Feb 2, 2013.
