University High School PTSA General Membership Meeting in the MPR Minutes for January 20, 2015 1. Call to Order –Barbara Boarnet, PTSA President 7:00 p.m. Barbara welcomed all attendees and called the meeting to order. 2. Student Rep Report – Kuki Tran, Student Rep Kuki reported that the recent Blood Drives and Toy Drives both went better than expected. She also reported on the success of “Wellness Week,” during which free hot chocolate was served and yoga was offered during Office Hours, in order to help students manage stress, especially around finals. Second semester spirit week is scheduled for the first week in February and will feature Uni Olympics. Winter Formal will be held February 7th; the theme will be “Inception: The Dance of Your Dreams.” 3. President’s Report – Barbara Boarnet, PTSA President Barbara reported that the first ever Winter Holiday Potluck held in December was a success. With more than 35 people in attendance, the event contributed to the PTSA’s overarching goal for the year: To Connect. The PTSA expects to host two more speakers this year; an informal show of hands indicated interest in “Teen Stress and Teen Depression” as a topic. 4. Nominating Committee – Barbara Boarnet, PTSA President Barbara requested five volunteers to serve on this year’s Nominating Committee to assemble candidates for next year’s PTSA Board. Motion to appoint Ashe Loganda, Jeanne Baran, and Caroline Magdanga to the Nominating Committee made by Barbara Boarnet / seconded by Nicole Washington / approved. Motion to appoint Natalia Guidotti and Negah Maghami to the Nominating Committee made by Ashe Loganda / seconded by Nicole Washington / approved. 5. Grad Night Report – Sumitra Sarma, 5th VP Grad Night Sumitra reported that although approximately 30 tickets have been sold in the last three weeks, ticket sales are well below the Committee’s target. Ticket prices go up on February 1. Sumitra reminded everyone in attendance that Grad Night is entirely self-funded and utilizes more than 100 volunteers in total, so seniors should buy their tickets to support the event. 6. Student Store Report – Laura Hwang, 3rd VP Student Store Laura reported that the Student Store is now open five days a week, thanks to additional volunteer support from the Chinese PA and the Korean PA. Some shifts are beginning to go uncovered, however, so Laura urged those in attendance to sign up using Sign Up Genius. 7. Principal’s Report – John Pehrson, Principal Mr. Pehrson reported the following: The school is preparing to conduct its WASC self-study (an accreditation process that occurs in a six-year cycle) The school will be gathering data from parents, students, and staff in order to prepare for the WASC self-study. The school is also in the process of evaluating the results of the new bell schedule that was implemented in September 2014. 8. Legislative Action – Deloris Yang Deloris reported that out of 18 applications, four students have been selected to join Deloris and the Uni Student Legislative Action Rep. on this year’s Legislative Action trip to Sacramento, on March 10, 2015. There will be five mandatory meetings for students prior to the trip in order to prepare. Motion to approve sending the UHS delegation to Sacramento Safari made by Joanne McDermott/seconded by Heike Rau/approved. 9. Treasurer’s Report –Susan Masterson, Treasurer Susan reported that income and expenses from the Student Store are on track to equal last year’s results, the Mini-Grant awards have been made, and all other income and expenses are in line with the budget. Motion to approve checks #917-934 made by Susan Masterson/seconded by Asha Loganda/approved. Motion to approve all payments that fall within the budget until the next scheduled meeting made by Susan Masterson/seconded by Sumitra Sarma/approved. Motion to approve budgeting and payment of $2,000 to UHS for a United Way donation made by Susan Masterson/seconded by Heike Rau/approved. 10. Trojan Spirit Breakfast and CPA Update – Emmy Lin, Chinese Parent Association Emmy reported that Trojan Spirit Breakfast is being held on January 21st to recognize students of outstanding character. At this annual event, Mr. Pehrson personally cooks pancakes for the students being recognized. Emmy also reported that the Chinese Parent Association is sponsoring a Staff Luncheon on February 13, 2015. Staff will receive goody bags from the CPA and enjoy a live performance from a Uni student dance group. 11. Secretary’s Report – Joanne McDermott, Recording Secretary Joanne submitted the minutes from November’s meeting. Deloris noted that the number of students going to Sacramento for the Legislative Action trip should be changed from 4 to 5. Motion to approve the minutes as amended made by Ashe Loganda/seconded by Negah Magami/approved. 12. Guest Speaker – Amanda Rubenstein, AR Academics Amanda Rubenstein, president/owner of AR Academics, presented “Face-off: SAT v. ACT.” Amanda focused on the implications of the redesigned SAT that will debut in 2016. 13.
