School Advisory Council Meeting Minutes

September 9, 2015

Meeting called to order at 6:40pm.

Review of May minutes – Ms. Shell

Mr. Saddler motioned to approve with adjustments

Mr. Barrow seconded the motion

Principal Update – Mr. Toliver

- Mr. Toliver welcomed everyone

- Margate is entering into its 50 th year and Broward County is in its 100 th year

- Student enrollment was 1220 and is now at 1239

- FSA scores should be arriving before winter break. EOC scores for Civics,

Algebra and Biology are out as well as FCAT Science

- Thanked business partners Winn-Dixie and PTSA for tonight’s refreshments

- The district is working with Administration to improve and work on RTi

- We are competing nationally in Vocabulary.com. We are #1 in Florida for the month of September, and 4 th in the nation. The top 3 students in each class will go to the Super Hero Dance for free.

- We have a new Positive Behavior Plan

- Gifted Symposium is tomorrow, September 17, 2015 at the Signature Grand.

New teachers will be attending to learn more strategies to work with our gifted population.

SAC Nominations for Secretary and Co-Chair – Mr. Daniel

Ms. Washington nominated Ms. Sayles for Secretary, seconded by Mr.

Barrow; accepted by Ms. Sayles

- Ms. Coletti nominated Ms. Johnson for Co-Chair, seconded by Dr.

Montgomery; accepted by Ms. Johnson

They were unopposed.

- They are local businesses that invest in our learning community

- All our business partners are listed on our school website

- Many purchase banners to advertise on Atlantic Boulevard

- Papa John’s will commit a percentage

Ms. Finn asked, “What is the cost of a banner?” Mr. Montgomery informed us that it

$300 for a first time purchase and $200 to renew.

We try to rotate every student through the school through the at least one program

Title 1 Parent Involvement – Ms. Washington

- Ms. Washington introduced herself as liaison.

- She explained what Title 1 is and how it works and parents rights

- Title I is the largest federal assistance program for our nation’s schools.

- Parent Orientation 2015 – Thursday, September 24

- Parent Training Academies

- Parent involvement nights – Open Houses th at 7pm at Arthur Ashe

- Asked for 3 parents to get involved in the trainings

- Parental Involvement Plan will be developed by our SAC throughout the year

- School-Parent Compact required and we have received 77% of the forms

Safety Updates – Ms. Harris

- We have our two required fire drills that were completed within 2 minutes

- We had our first tornado drill completed within 3 minutes

- We our implementing a new PBS – Positive Behavior Support

- We used the first week of school teach positive and correct behaviors used in the classroom, cafeteria and hallways

- We have the HERO system – a technology based system that allows us to record positive points to be saved up for incentives

- We have a PBS team with certain personnel, parents and students

- Show self-control

- Take Responsibility

- Remain Tolerant

- Obtain Accountability

- Nurture Positive Attitude

- Give Respect

School Activities – Ms. Coletti

- 9/17/15 – Early Release Day –

- 9/18/15 – Home soccer game – after school

- Next week – Attendance Counts Week and Peace Week

- 9/24/15 – Interim Reports go home

- 10/22/15 – Curriculum Carnival – 6:00pm – 8:30pm

- Family educational game night

- Pizza dinner provided

Questions by Parents:

Earl Blake asked, “Where do the students go that are going to the dance?” Ms. Coletti answered that we will meet in the gym and the 6 th graders will be released a few minutes early.

Mr. Saddler, “What can we do to interest parents into the PTSA/SAC meetings?”, Mr.

Daniel encouraged parents to invite other parents and give suggestions.

Ms. Finn suggested, “Giving extra points to the students who bring their parents.”

Ms. Olejniczak suggested, “Giving extra credit points and homework passes.”
