Barbara J. Deily Barbara has been with the University of Virginia Internal Audit Department for her entire career. She started there as a staff auditor in 1983 and gradually progressed to direct the department. She has been the top audit executive at the institution for over 20 years. Her department performs audits of the University, the Medical Center, the IT functions, and the College at Wise. Just when she thought she had pretty much “seen it all”, the next big special project came along. In August 2010 the Audit Department was called in to investigate a situation where the Business Manager of a literary journal had committed suicide. This incident brought much unsought national attention to the University and was featured on the “Today Show”, in the Wall Street Journal, and numerous other publications. Barbara’s ideas of what really constitutes “high risk” were altered during the course of this project. Barbara obtained her undergraduate degree in Accounting from Penn State and her graduate degree in Accounting from UVA. She is a CPA and a CISA in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She has taught for the Institute of Internal Auditors and has worked on a “digital signature” project for the Commonwealth. She is co-author of a chapter in a book coming out next year by NACUBO on university financial management.
