Congratulations to Ms. Haskett for being named the September Teacher of the Month and Ms. Collier for being named the September Support Staff of the Month. Saturday School Beginning We are looking forward to hosting 180 students for our Saturday Academy beginning October 25th. Families who are identified for this opportunity will receive a letter this Monday from Mrs. Elkins and Mr. Johnson The fee for this program is $50 per student to help with the $20,000 program cost. We are planning for all students. Our goal is to close the large academic gaps amongst our students. Therefore, participating families must commit to the twice/monthly sessions between October and May in order for the program to be successful and we meet our program goals to suffice the expense. Character Corner The character trait for the month of October is respect. Please discuss respect with your child, and talk about ways to respect oneself, others, our community, and property. A suggested activity for families to support this initiative would be the Friendly Dinner Activity. *Give every family member a paper place mat or paper. Have each person write his or her name in the center and draw a picture or write of something he/she likes or that represents him. Once everyone has personalized a place mat, pass the place mats to other family members. Around the edge of each person's place mat, the other people should write/draw something special about that person as well as something worthy of respect. While eating, ask each person to share what he/she respects about the others. Make Reading Relevant Every time you pair a book with an experience, you are giving your child an opportunity to learn more about their world. Books can help to make real-world experiences more meaningful. Books can help us make sense of the world, supporting our understanding of concepts and observation of patterns. So, after your child reads a book at home or for an assignment create an experience together. For example: *If you are traveling to a new place, get a travel book about your destination. *Visit a museum to observe artifacts from history, art or scientific pursuits. *Watch a movie about the book and discuss similarities and differences. *Copy an experience that was in the book, and do what the characters did in the story.
