Nurse Residency NICU Track Overview The NICU Orientation program is a 12-week competency-based orientation program that provides an introduction to care of the critically ill neonate under the guidance of a preceptor. Orientation progresses from simple to complex patients. The 12-week initial plan includes didactic and clinical experiences working closely with a preceptor utilizing performance criteria and competency checklists. After completion of the initial 12 weeks, the NLRN will have the opportunity to attend a neonatal didactic curriculum that covers all aspects of neonatal nursing. The classes are taught by subject matter experts and provide information that is both current and relevant to the NLRN clinical experience. Presentations incorporate family-centered care, skills lab, critical thinking, case studies, evidenced-based practice, assessments, leadership, professionalism and nursing excellence. Participants complete the NRP course and STABLE within the first year of employment. The goal for the NLRN is to deliver safe, independent timely neonatal nursing care and practice according to the Iowa Nurse Practice Act, Family Centered Care and CHOC’s policies, procedures and standards of care.
