NCoNM NURSING COUNCIL OF NEW MEXICO Meeting Notes Conf Call Practice/Workplace Environment Committee (PWE) March 25, 2010 Members present: Kathy Bushnell, Debra Werner, Karrie Brazaski, Pat O’hara, Ellen Interlandi (SCRIBE), Anna Von Dielingen (led call) Priority: Technology Update for current cohort Summary: CTI provided 4 netbooks with Verizon wifi for Westside from $$ not spent from Con Alma Grant. Haven’t found any other grants to support technology needs. Many hospitals have firewalls, so difficult to use hospital computers. Holy Cross has netbooks budgeted in their upcoming budget. Goals: Explore opportunities to expand monies for technology Priority: Cohort Update Summary: Westside has 1 OR and 1 M/S resident. OR team doing well, 80% of learning plan completed (preceptor and resident on the same shift). M/S team doing OK, 5% of learning plan completed (preceptor and resident NOT on same shift). Goals: Should try to keep them on the same shift; need highly motivated residents; set expectations to commit/complete timelines. Unit mgrs need to have buy-in as it can’t be the CNO who follows daily/weekly progress. Requires 4 hrs on line weekly, lots of materials to be read for class. Residents should have completed hospital ORNT and passed NCLEX prior to starting residency program Priority: Update on presentations Summary: Presentations have been given to Women’s Hospital, Alamogordo LTC, Crown Point, and Las Cruces southern nursing leadership group. Goals: Westside hopes to have 2 for June cohort. Those applications have to be in by May 3. Priority: Data Update Summary: Kathy reviewed collection tools; what else do we want to collect? Demographics? We should look at previous research studies and see what they collected. We should also find out the current retention rate for newly licensed RNs Goals: Kathy and Deb will compile a list of questions to ask for data collection. Ellen/Anna will do a survey monkey from NMHA to determine newly licensed RN (NLRN) retention rate, but will hold on sending any surveys until we determine what else we want Ellen to ask (besides just a NLRN retention rate). EXAMPLE: NLRNs hired in 2007, 2008, 2009 Those specific RNs that were employed in 2007, how many were still employed as of 2008, 2009, etc. Priority: Tracking NLRNs Summary: Discussion surrounded whether PWE/NMCNE should be a clearinghouse for information from SON and NLRNs on where they go upon graduation Goals: TBD Priority: Grant extension and future direction Summary: NWRNR (Dr. Molinari’s study) is looking to extend their grant by 2 yrs, and include us as a collaborator. This might give us the opportunity to have more cohorts without having to find our own grants to fund. If so, NMCNE might consider adding a PT director Goals: Anna will follow up with possible role of a director via email. Priority: Tool to measure/evaluate nurses who apply to be preceptors NCoNM NURSING COUNCIL OF NEW MEXICO Meeting Notes Conf Call Practice/Workplace Environment Committee (PWE) March 25, 2010 Summary: discussion about the difference between a preceptor for orientation to the hospital/unit this is here, this is how we do it/this is our hospital culture/let’s see what gets thrown at us today, vs. a preceptor for the residency program let’s plan/evaluate areas for development ( a different level of strategy, acculturating into nursing, not just an organization). Goals: Deb will define definitions for review at next meeting. Next meeting scheduled is April 9, 2010, 09:00-10:00 (conf call) Respectfully submitted, Ellen Interlandi
