Internship Opportunity Terms of Reference Communications and Media Relations Intern Location: Deadline: New York 26 November 2015 (only short-listed candidates will be contacted for interviews. A decision is expected by 20 December) Start Date: Duration: January or February – July or August 2016 6 months (4 or 5 months is possible but preference will be given to interns available for 6 months) The Communications Section at UN Women Headquarters in New York seeks to enlist a full-time intern to support the media team. The intern will assist with monitoring the news, assisting with research and drafting communications material, as well as supporting media outreach. Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Media Officer, the intern will be responsible for the following: Support media monitoring of relevant UN Women coverage and assist in the production of news media reports on an on-going basis Keeping abreast of relevant news and collecting news articles on UN Women activities and programmes at HQ and in the field, often in collaboration with UN Women Communications officers Research and support for media interviews and materials Fact-checking, analyzing, and drafting material for external communications. This includes providing support in the production of communications materials such as factsheets and press releases Actively expand and maintain the media contact database Research and add media contacts to UN Women’s database, as well as updating existing contacts, as needed Support media outreach Other tasks as requested by the Communications Team Requirements/Qualifications: Must have a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in either Journalism or Communications. Students in the final year of a Bachelor’s programme as well as recent graduates (maximum one year after graduation) may also be considered. Preference will be given to candidates recently granted, or in the process of pursuing, a Master’s or advanced university degree programme in any field. Experience working in either journalism or institutional communications and experience with media outreach, advocacy or public relations Fluency in English. Preference will be given to candidates also fluent in French and/or Spanish. Knowledge of Arabic, Chinese or Russian is also an asset. Familiarity with gender equality/ women’s issues.
