Sociology (major: 49 hours) AND Ethnic Studies (major hours: 33 / minor hours: 18) Ethnic Studies enhances Sociology’s study of the social processes that create, maintain, and transform our society. Like Ethnic Studies, Sociology is interdisciplinary. Both disciplines analyze how social institutions and social structures such as the economy, politics, education, the family, mass media, and the criminal justice system affect individuals in society, but Ethnic Studies foregrounds race in their analyses of these social processes. Sociology examines the patterning, problems and prospects of human relationships. That is, they consider how and why people behave as they do, the implications of these patterns for other aspects of social life, and how new ways of living may be built and sustained. To some extent, sociology shares these commitments with other disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences, including political science, geography, history, economics, human services, psychology, and Ethnic Studies. However, sociology specifically focuses on the study of human groups and organizations. Like Ethnic Studies majors, the career potential of sociology majors is almost limitless. Double majoring in Sociology and Ethnic Studies arms students with the knowledge they need to become employed by research institutes, the criminal justice system, public health and welfare organizations, private businesses, law firms, international agencies, medical centers, educational institutions, advertising firms, survey and polling organizations, and more. Double majoring also provides great preparation for going on to law school, medical school, business school, and for graduate programs in social work, education, public policy, religious ministry, mass communications, public health, non-profit administration, and international affairs.
