General information:

You are expected to show up on time
Read and participate
Attend all lectures
o Charlotte will send out a page on the day of the lecture to let you know
what time the lecture is. Please have your pager accessible at all times
while in the hospital. Please let the Scrub techs know that they must
answer check your pagers while scrubbed into cases.
Return to AIMMC –as your chief/resident details- after Friday lectures
Present one topic in front of your peers and one attending
Call:
-
Call is OB focused
Attend the sign out prior to your call
Follow at least one laboring patient
Participate on cesarean sections
Triage patients
Work mainly with the first call resident
Wear blue scrubs
Week day call schedule as below
Weekend call schedule is either 6a-5p or 5p-6a on Saturday and 5p- 9a on
Sunday.
If you have a Friday call, you are expected to come back after lectures on
Friday and stay until 10-11 PM.
You MAY switch calls to another comparable day (weekday for weekday/
weekend for weekend) when no other students are on call OR a 1:1 switch is
permissible as well.

A week- by-week preview
General Obstetrics- “OB”
You will spend 2 weeks on general OB. While on this part of the rotation, you will be
participating in all aspects of the laboring/delivered patient.
Expectations: Arrive on time. Write at least one post partum/post op note on a clinic
patient on the mother/baby unit. Attend the obstetric sign out rounds at 9 am and 5 pm
daily (unless otherwise instructed by your chief). Follow one laboring patient. Participate
in cesarean sections. See patients in triage.
Who to report to: The OB chief
What time to Arrive: 6 AM
What to Wear: Blue Scrubs
What to Read: Blue prints, Case Files, First Aid… Etc.
What do I do when I’m on Call: Come in @ 230 pm and stay until after rounding/grand
rounds the next day
Maternal Fetal Medicine/REI/ Clinic Week
Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) is high-risk obstetrics. While on this aspect of the
rotation, you will be seeing several high risk patients and learning about the
pathophysiology of several diseases on pregnancy. The REI aspect will take place on the
Monday morning of your rotation. Here, you will see procedures related to IVF. The
remainder of the week will be spent at the OB/Gyne treatment center that is a resident
focused clinic.
Expectations: Follow the schedule that is provided for you. There are several clinics
where you are expected be an active participant on this rotation. Work on you H and Ps
and presenting skills while also learning about the reciprocal nature pregnancy has on
several disease states.
Who to report to: MFM resident, Clinic Chief
The week “at a glance”
Monday AM: Go directly to Fertility Centers of Illinois- Do NOT come to the resident
lectures at AIMMC first. You should arrive between 630 and 7. When you go in the
doors of FCI, veer to the left or the “IVF side.” Let the clerk at the desk know that you
are a student from Masonic there to see IVF. They will help facilitate your morning at the
clinic.
Monday PM: High risk OB clinic. 3049 N. Wilton. Here you will be working with the
MFM resident seeing high-risk OB patients at the clinic. Before you leave, speak with the
MFM resident to ask what time you should be at the hospital the next day.
EVERY OTHER WEEK DAY MORNING: Round with the MFM resident on the
patients on the service.
Tuesday Morning: After rounding with the MFM attending, stay at the Antenatal
resource center to observe obstetric related ultrasounds.
Tuesday Afternoon: Pair up with one of the MFM attendings to work on consultations.
Wednesday Morning: After rounding with the MFM service, then make your way over to
MFM clinic.
Wednesday Afternoon: Return to the clinic for the MEA clinic
Thursday Morning: Round with the MFM service in the morning. Spend the rest of the
day @ the OB/Gyne clinic
Friday: Attend Lectures @ UIC then contact MFM resident for further instructions.
What time to Arrive: Please ask MFM resident unless otherwise noted above.
What to wear: Business Attire
What to Read: Creasy, Williams Obstetrics
What to do when I’m on call: Come in at the regular time in the morning and leave at
10PM at night. Return the next morning at the appropriate time.
General Gynecology
You will spend two weeks on the gynecology (Gyne) service. These are two surgically
focused weeks and the majority of the time will be spent in the OR.
Expectations: Round on postoperative patients with the gynecology service. Read about
different types of cases prior to scrubbing in. Split up the cases amongst the students –
scrub in on your assigned cases. Meet the patient and do a brief H and P prior to the
surgery. Scrub in on your assigned cases and follow the patient through the prep and
hold, surgery, and into the PACU. Attend evening rounds as per the gyne chief.
What time to Arrive: 530-6 as per Gyne Chief.

What to do for call: Come in at the regular time and leave the hospital @ 10 PM. Return
the next day at the appropriate time.
Gynecologic Oncology
Your gyn onc week will be spent learning about gynecologic cancers and the patients
who have them.
Expectations: Read about the various types of cancer affecting the female reproductive
tract. Attend clinics, surgeries, tumor board and rounds.
What time to arrive: Depends on what Gyn/Onc resident says
Who to report to: Gyn onc Resident
What to wear: Gentlemen: Button up shirt and tie /scrubs. Ladies: Business attire/Scrubs
What to Read: Berek and Hacker Gyn Onc text
What to do for call: Come in at the regular time and leave the hospital @ 10 PM. Arrive
the next day at the expected time.
