Professor of National Security Affairs Open and Multiple Ranks (Assistant/Associate/Full) (includes leadership studies focus) Join the faculty of one of the nation’s largest and most vibrant graduate teaching departments in the interdisciplinary field of national and international security studies. The Department of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College seeks to fill a full-time vacancy beginning no later than July 2016. We invite applications from highly qualified candidates who are interested in teaching within the resident master degree programs of the world’s oldest graduate institution of professional military education. We are a blended faculty of scholars and practitioners providing graduate professional education to motivated students comprising midcareer military and civilian national security professionals from the United States and more than sixty partner countries who we are preparing as the senior national security leaders of tomorrow. Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. that is directly relevant for one of the following areas: 1) international relations and regional security studies; 2) foreign policy analysis and U.S. foreign policy; or, 3) leadership studies. Strongest consideration will be given to candidates with scholarly or professional expertise that enables them to teach, research, and contribute to curriculum development in at least two or more of these areas. We are especially interested in augmenting existing departmental expertise in leadership studies within the national security context. Additional desirable qualifications include: relevant applied professional experience such as in government or international organizations; demonstrated teaching excellence (preferably at the graduate level); a scholarly record that demonstrates significant future potential for research and publication; and, a demonstrated commitment to collegiality and an interdisciplinary ethos. Ph.D. candidates who are very near completion are welcome to apply if they otherwise possess extremely strong qualifications, for example extensive relevant professional experience, but such applications will be considered only with compelling evidence that the Ph.D. will be completed by July 2016. Specific responsibilities include: teaching within two distinctive common core survey courses in contemporary security studies; developing common core curricula including individual class sessions; developing and teaching elective courses; active professional contribution including through research and publication; and, college service. Normal teaching load is 2/2/0 based on a 10-month trimester system. This involves teaching up to two seminar sections (11-16 students) in each of the fall and the winter trimesters, with a spring trimester and summer inter-sessional period devoted primarily to research, curriculum development, and college service. All positions are 12-month and full-time on an initial multi-year appointment that is renewable on an ongoing basis. Rank at time of appointment is commensurate to qualifications. Salary is competitive for all ranks and is accompanied by a generous federal civil service package of health, retirement, vacation, sick leave, and other benefits. The college is a non-tenure granting institution but has established a long record of extremely high levels of faculty renewal and retention. The U.S. Naval War College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges to award a Master of Arts Degree in Defense and Strategic Studies and a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies, and also by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to award certification in Joint Professional Military Education Phase 1 & 2. Applications will be accepted until October 25, 2015 and must include the following: 1) a detailed cover letter specifying the academic rank being applied for and addressing all of the qualifications noted above; 2) a CV; and, 3) prior teaching evaluations (if available). In addition, applicants for assistant or associate rank must arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent separately, while senior-level applicants may instead provide a list of three references.
