School of Natural Sciences, NUI Galway
Ref. No: NUIG 69-12
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a
postdoctoral researcher with Microbiology, School of Natural Sciences at the National University of
Ireland, Galway. This position is available from October 2012 for 11 months.
Job Description:
The successful candidate will work in the Marine Microbial Ecology Group, to investigate nitrogen
cycling in coastal sediments. In particular this project will focus on the role bacteria and archaea
play in ammonia oxidation in coastal sediments. A combination of fieldwork, isotope-pairing
techniques and molecular analysis of ammonia oxidisers diversity, abundance and functioning in
situ and in SIP microcosms will be employed. The successful candidate will have a PhD in
Molecular Microbial Ecology, Biogeochemical Cycling or similar; experience in experimental design
and associated data analysis; strong writing skills as demonstrated by publication of peer-reviewed
scientific papers; and a proven ability to work independently. Field sampling and presentation of

The ideal candidate should have a track record in a research and development environment and
strong microbial ecology experience is essential. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the Molecular
Microbial Ecology, Biogeochemical Cycling or similar sciences. The ideal candidate would have
experience in molecular microbial ecology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, high
throughput sequencing, (RT)-Q-PCR, SIP, FISH and/or isotope paring techniques as evidenced by
publication record. Candidates should have excellent communication and organisational skills; be
highly motivated and passionate about developing new research; and have strong documentation,
oral and interpersonal skills.
