Service Guide Cockburn-Kwinana Area Hear at Home Service description Hear at Home provides “in home” services to families with young children with diagnosed hearing loss. Parents, who desire for their child to be a competent listening and speaking individual, integrating fully in the hearing world, work (weekly/fortnightly) alongside an auditory-verbal therapist. An auditory-verbal therapist is a professional who has tertiary qualifications in deaf education, and/or audiology and speech therapy. The auditory-verbal approach focuses on attaining normal developmental listening and speaking milestones to ensure children with hearing loss develop just as a child with typical hearing. The approach guides and coaches parents to facilitate their child’s listening and spoken language potential throughout their everyday life. Hear at Home therapists capitalise on the everyday life events of a young child’s life and supports parents to identify listening and spoken language learning opportunities. Parents become skilled at using many strategies and techniques in the home environment to ensure optimal listening and spoken language outcomes for their child.
