SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
Christina Perigoe, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT
Dr. Christina Perigoe is currently the Coordinator of the Early Oral Intervention graduate
program in Speech and Hearing Sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi. This
program is designed to train professionals to work with families in maximizing the listening and
spoken language potential of infants and young children with hearing loss. Dr. Perigoe is a
certified teacher, teacher of the deaf, speech pathologist and auditory-verbal therapist. In
addition to her Ph.D. in Communication Disorders from McGill University, Dr. Perigoe has
three Master’s degrees (Elementary Education; Education of the Deaf; Research) and a postgraduate degree in Educational Administration and Supervision. Dr. Perigoe has gained
extensive experience in clinical supervision and administration at the graduate and undergraduate
levels, while teaching at universities in Canada, Australia and the US. She is the co-editor of The
Volta Review Monograph on the topic of children with hearing loss and additional special needs.
ABSTRACT
Auditory-Verbal Practice and Children with Multiple Challenges: Assessment and
Intervention will provide professionals with a comprehensive overview of children with hearing
loss and multiple special needs. Professional challenges in assessment, intervention, parent
counselling and behaviour management will be presented. Functional assessment tools and
specific auditory-verbal strategies for working with this population of children will be provided
in addition to unique experiences faced by cochlear implant teams.
LEARNER OUTCOMES
Following this conference, participants will be able to:





Identify “red flags” associated with children who have hearing loss and additional
special needs.
Apply information about functional assessments to select appropriate assessment
tools in listening and spoken language.
Identify challenges faced by cochlear implant teams when considering a cochlear
implant for a child with additional special needs.
Identify auditory-verbal strategies that may be used successfully with children
who have hearing loss and additional special needs.
Identify specific special needs and challenges which are most likely to occur with
hearing loss.
