Sutter Medical Center Sacramento Volunteer Service Description Position Title: Heart and Vascular Institute Outpatient Volunteer Location: Buhler Building, Suite 710 Service: Sutter Heart and Vascular Institute Outpatient services provides services to patients in need of the following care: heart failure, ventricular assisted device (VAD), transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), heart transplant, and adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD). The patient population ranges from young adults to geriatrics. Clinic time may include physical exams, lab work, EKG, echocardiography study, medication reconciliation and consultation with a cardiologist, a cardiac surgeon, and the nurse coordinator. Objective: The main priority of the volunteer is to assist the staff with providing comfort measures to patients, families, and visitors through the utilization of "rounding" with the patients and assisting staff with routine duties of the department. The volunteer will have the opportunity to interact in a professional medical setting and to experience hands on (either directly or indirectly) educational and real-life learning experiences. Volunteers will have the opportunity (as appropriate) to observe a procedure and to meet with an M.D. prior to the case to discuss what will happen during the procedure. Hours: Monday – Thursday 9am-4:30 pm. No holidays. Qualifications: Friendly, positive, patient, and professional attitude. Works well with frail patients and their families/caregivers, as well as with hospital staff and physicians. Ability to display compassion, and caring in a non-judgmental way. Artificial nails for patient care staff are prohibited due to infection control concerns. Training and Competencies: Hospital Departmental specific Wheelchair (if applicable) Responsibilities: Visit (round) with patients Greet patients and visitors Assist staff in cleaning and preparing rooms for new patients May assist with EKG’s, blood pressure and pulse ox hook up Provide comfort measures to patients and visitors as requested by RN Act a liaison between department staff and families Escort patients and visitors to various departments :Capital Pavilion, EKG, Echo and lab (wheelchair written competency required) Assist with stocking supplies Assist staff with answering phones Assist staff with cleaning wheelchairs, gurneys and other equipment Compile patient procedure packets and make photocopies as needed Other miscellaneous tasks as assigned
