Sutter Medical Center Sacramento Volunteer Service Description Position Title: Cardiovascular Interventional Unit (CVIU, CCU, PCU) Volunteer CVIU-Cath lab; PCU-Open Heart, VADs; CCU-medical/surgical intervention, heart failure Issue Date: 8/25/15 Location: Ose Adams 4th Floor The Cardiovascular Interventional unit is a busy unit with high acuity patients. Service: Objective: Hours: Qualifications: Training and Competencies: Responsibilities: The type of patient ranges from medical conditions such as: congestive heart failure (CHF), heart transplants and open heart patients. The volunteer assists the staff with providing comfort measures to the patient and family members. The main priority of the volunteer is to assist the staff with providing comfort measures to patients, families, and visitors through the utilization of "rounding" with the patients and assisting staff with routine duties of the department. Provide the volunteer opportunities for learning professional and social interaction in a medical setting and to experience hands on (either directly or indirectly) educational and real-life learning experiences. The volunteer supports the staff in a variety of ways: equipment and clerical support, running errands within the hospital and assisting with daily routine patient care. Monday-Sunday 8am-10pm Friendly, positive and professional attitude. Works well with patients, staff and visitors. Does not have an aversion to procedures and blood. Ability to display compassion, and caring in a non-judgmental way. Artificial nails for patient care staff are prohibited due to infection control concerns. Hospital Departmental specific Wheelchair (if applicable) Round with patients Answer call lights Stock supplies Answer phones Assist unit secretary with clerical tasks (assemble patient charts, admin packs, photo copy...) Make unoccupied beds Discharge patients per RN request (wheelchair competency required) Assist staff with patient transport Run errands to the Lab and Central Supply Pass water to patients as directed by staff Assist staff with hourly rounds Tele box (electrode placement) Assist nursing staff with patient care tasks Prepare patients for meals (wash cloth for hands, clear area where tray goes) Remove trays after meals May observe bedside procedures (chest tubes) only with RN and MD approval Volunteers are encouraged to let staff know what they would like to do and learn after they have been initially trained If unable to make shift please call unit at 916-887-1430 and notify Charge Nurse
