Read about the different bird groups below. Then, look at the pictures of bird feet and match the bird group to the type of feet. Explain your reasoning for each decision. Raptors Raptors, also called birds of prey, include hawks, eagles and owls. Birds of prey hunt and eat other animals. These birds capture, kill and carry prey with their feet. Water birds There are many different types of water birds, such as ducks, flamingos and seagulls. These birds spend a large part of their time in or around the water. Water birds have feet that help them to swim and to not sink while walking on top of soft sand near the water’s edge. Woodpeckers Woodpeckers are birds that use their strong beaks to drill holes into plants and extract insects inside the plant. They have feet that help them to climb up, down and sideways along tree trunks. www.njctl.org 4th Grade PSI Plant & Animal Structures and Processes __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ __________________________________ Pictures Source: http://www.fernbank.edu/Birding/bird_feet.htm www.njctl.org 4th Grade PSI Plant & Animal Structures and Processes
