5. FLYING WITH THE MOON ON THEIR WINGS Every year during autumn and early winter birds travel from their nestlings places to warmer lands. The willow warbler is the smallest of all the birds. The young migrating birds are the brave little voyagers. They make the return journey during spring and early summer. Ringing is done by capturing a bird and placing on its leg a light band of metal of plastic. The band bears a number, date, an identification mark and the address to which the finder is requested to return the ring. The wild duck, the Rosy Pastor and the wagtail come to our lakes from central Asia and Siberia. Birds migrate in winter to escape the cold and to find food. The Himalayas are 2,400 kms far away from Nilgris. P. KAMATCHI KARUR
