Climate Zone Project Name: __________________________ 3rd Grade PSI Areas on Earth are separated into five different climate zones: polar, continental, moderate, dry and tropical. Each climate zone can be broken down into smaller categories. For example, the tropical climate zone can be either tropical wet or tropical wet and dry. This means that some tropical areas are wet year round while others are wet for part of the year and dry for part of the year. What main climate zone have you chosen to study? _____________________________ Follow the instructions on the following pages to compile information about your climate zone. Then, display your information in poster format. www.njctl.org 3rd Grade PSI Weather & Climate Climate Zone Information 1. On a computer, open up the following page: http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/pd/oceans_weather_ climate/media/climate_zones.swf 2. On the interactive map, you can click on different climate zones to learn information about them. Click on the different categories within your chosen climate zone. Choose one to focus on. a. What specific climate zone do you choose? ____________________________________________ b. Where is the climate zone located on Earth (what latitudes)? ____________________________________________ c. What type and how much precipitation occurs here? ____________________________________________ ____________________________________________ ____________________________________________ d. Is there any other climate information that you think is important to write down? ____________________________________________ ____________________________________________ ____________________________________________ 3. Choose a specific city within your climate zone. You will gather weather data on this city. What city do you choose? ________________________________________________ 4. Go to www.weatherbase.com. Find weather information on your chosen city. You can search by first locating the country and then the city or by typing in your city into the search box in the top right corner. 5. When you find the information on your city, look at the data charts provided. Find the data charts for “Average Temperature” and “Average Precipitation”. Copy that information below. Month Average Temp (⁰C) Average Precip. (mm) January February March April May June July August September October November December www.njctl.org 3rd Grade PSI Weather & Climate 6. Use the information from your chart to create a climograph for your city. Use the graph paper at the end of these instructions. 7. Create a poster for your area. Be sure to include all of the information in this handout on your poster, either in picture or written form. www.njctl.org 3rd Grade PSI Weather & Climate Temperature Precipitation Climograph of __________________________ Month www.njctl.org 3rd Grade PSI Weather & Climate
