Creative Arts Therapy Department SPRING INSTITUTE 2015 Monday, May 18th – Wednesday, May 20th Pratt Brooklyn Campus The Spring Institute is a three-day introductory educational program exploring creative arts therapy. Nine modules will be offered examining various aspects of creative arts therapy. Participants may take any combination of these non-credit modules. The information that follows offers detailed information and registration materials. SPRING INSTITUTE DAY ONE: Module 1, Monday, 5/18, 9AM-11AM – North Hall Room 212 Improvisation – Joan Wittig Improvisation has a profound power to stimulate expression, and provides the opportunity for a deep exploration of self. This experiential workshop will explore the basic elements of movement improvisation. Participants will examine how improvisation can facilitate an experience of feeling spontaneous and alive. Module 2, Monday, 5/18, 11:15AM-1:15PM – North Hall Room 213 Dreams, Myths, and Creative Arts Therapy – Melissa Klay Dreams, myths, and the creative arts therapies have been in existence since the beginning of man. Each form not only serves as a function but also as a creative outlet. In the Creative Arts Therapy field, the nonverbal language of art, dance, drama, music, and poetry help the individual bridge the unconscious to the conscious. The same is true for dreams and myths. In this workshop, we will discover how dreams and myths are integrated into the creative arts therapies in order to explore one’s psyche and to help tend to the soul. Module 3, Monday, 5/18, 2:30PM-4:30PM – North Hall Room 213 Intro to Creative Arts Therapy – Laurel Thompson The theory and practice of creative arts therapy will be explored through experiential exercises. The use of kinesthetic experience, movement expression, and visual knowledge, as well as their integration will be explored. SPRING INSTITUTE DAY TWO: Module 4, Tuesday, 5/19, 9AM-11AM – North Hall Room 212 Creating Space: Yoga and Art Therapy – Sara Rothstein In Creating Space you will be guided through the use of yoga to create space within yourself and use art making as an external awareness of this process. Yoga breath work (pranayama) and movement (asana) will help you create internal space and then we will explore, through the experience of art making, how the use of this space may serve as a tool for life. You're welcome to bring your own yoga mat. No previous art or yoga experience is necessary. Module 5, Tuesday, 5/19, 11:15AM-1:15PM – North Hall Room 213 Sock Monkeys, Superheroes and Worry Dolls: Soft Sculpture Materials in Art Therapy – Kim Bush Doll making will be explored with a wide range of populations where creative arts therapy is used to address issues of body integrity, embodiment of feelings, and reparation of self-image. The process of sewing slows down the creation of the art object, allows time for connection to an inner sense of nurturing, and offers a soothing, tactile experience to embody emotions. In this workshop, participants will examine case vignettes of the use of dolls in therapy and explore ways to create their own soft sculpture pieces. Module 6, Tuesday, 5/19, 2:30PM-4:30PM – North Hall Room 210 Is This Cultural? Art Therapy and Cultural Identity – Maria Romani de Goes The art form presents the possibility of holding ambivalence in a safe manner. Such exploration is one of the strength of art therapy. On the premise that one benefits from being in contact with self in order to be authentically open to others, in this workshop participants will have the space to explore their cultural identity through art-making and discussion. This experiential workshop will give a taste of how the multilayered nature of art can assist people in being aware, to negotiate and embrace cultural aspects of themselves. The art will work as a bridge to create contact with others from different cultures, exploring one’s own uniqueness, sameness and universal qualities of the human experience. SPRING INSTITUTE DAY THREE: Module 7, Wednesday, 5/20, 9AM-11AM – North Hall Room 212 Authentic Movement: Choreographing the Inner Landscape – Julie Miller Creativity arises from the deepest, most authentic layers of the self. Through the medium of Authentic Movement, this workshop will provide an opportunity to explore the authentic self as a source of creativity in one’s work and life. By allowing the body to express itself without judgment or expectation, we create the space for those parts of the self to be heard without the demands of the everyday obligations that impinge on it Module 8, Wednesday, 5/20, 11:15AM-1:15PM – North Hall Room 210 Art and our Environment – Dina Schapiro Art, not only allows expression of your inner environment but it also reflects your relationship to the external environment. This workshop will explore through the creation of a three dimensional art piece, the complex inter-relationship of these two environments. Art is the bridge that connects how we affect our environment and how it affects us. Module 9, Wednesday, 5/20, 2:30PM-4:30PM – North Hall Room 213 Open Studio Art – Judy Luongo Open Studio is about communing with our innermost creative voice in an atmosphere of safety. We will experience being alone in the presence of others and share in the facilitation of energy, which nurtures contact with one's personal truth.
