Regional Program Options and Higher Skills Major Programs
Regional Learning Choices Programs empower students by providing an opportunity to
develop and explore skills in a particular area of interest. All students may apply for the
programs.
The application process for secondary Regional Learning Choices Programs opens Oct.
28, 2015. Application dates for middle school programs vary from school to school. See
program pages (links below) for specific dates.

Advanced Placement
The Advanced Placement (AP) program allows students to pursue university-level studies while
in secondary school. Students can earn a first-year university credit for each AP credit achieved.
In grades 9 and 10, students in the AP program will fulfill the requirements of the Ontario
curriculum, while experiencing additional enrichment to prepare them for the senior level AP
courses.
At the senior level, students select from available AP courses and work towards successful
completion of the AP exams. Subject areas include English, mathematics, science, social
science and French. The program is designed to enable students to think deeply and take
personal responsibility for their learning.

Graphic Design Management: Flexography
Flexography is a package print technology and a growing segment of the printing industry.
Students learn to design and manufacture industry-standard packaging products. The program
prepares students for entry into post-secondary programs, or a career in the printing industry
upon graduation. Students may apply to begin the program in grades 9, 10 or 11. The program
is open to all students—there is no program boundary.

The Arts
Regional Arts programs are offered at the middle and secondary school level. At the middle
school level, students who are accepted into the program will experience a comprehensive
education in the arts, while learning the Ontario curriculum. At the secondary level, students
accepted into the program will experience a comprehensive education in an arts discipline of
their choice, while learning the Ontario curriculum.
Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of arts experiences including
guest artists in the classroom, field trips and co-curricular activities. Students must audition to
be accepted into the program. Information about the audition is available from each of the
schools.

International Business and Technology (IBT)
The International Business Technology (IBT) program provides students with a challenging
program in all academic areas. Students enrolled in the program will explore subjects from a
global perspective.

International Baccalaureate (IB)
The International Baccalaureate (IB) program provides a stimulating academic environment that
celebrates learning and connects it to the world outside the classroom. It emphasizes
awareness and acceptance of all cultures and attitudes, and fosters an understanding of how
and why we learn. The Middle Years IB program is available at WG Davis (6, 7 and 8), Turner
Fenton (9 and 10) and Glenforest (9 and 10). The Diploma Program is available at Turner
Fention and Glenforest.
The International Baccalaureate program is designed by the International Baccalaureate
Organization, a non-profit Swiss-based educational foundation. It was formed in 1968 with an
initial goal of establishing a common curriculum and university entry credentials. Upon
completion of the IB program, students earn a diploma that is recognized by universities
internationally.
Students can apply for the IB program in grade 9 without having attended the program in grade
7 and 8.

Sports
The Regional Sports Program exposes students to a range of physical activities and focuses on
lifelong health, wellness and leadership. Students in the program participate in physical
education year round and take part in co-curricular athletics or community involvement to build
leadership skills. Students have the opportunity to complete industry-recognized certifications in
first aid, personal training, coaching and officiating, among others. In grade 11, students will
have the option to transition into the Specialist High Skills Major program in sports.

International and Executive Leadership Academy
The International and Executive Leadership Academy builds leaders for tomorrow. In this
technologically engaging program, students in the International and Executive Leadership
Academy complete all of the requirements of the Ontario curriculum while participating in
enhancements such as conferences, field trips, camps and specialized workshops designed to
develop critical thinking, creativity and confidence. The program provides opportunities for
students to take part in local, national and global projects and complete industry-recognized
certifications. Students will participate in the prestigious and internationally recognized Duke of
Edinburgh Award to further develop their leadership skills in the areas of community service,
adventurous journey, skill and physical recreation.
In grade 11, students will also have the opportunity to acquire the Specialist High Skills Major in
business or information and communication technology. The program is open to all students

SciTech
The SciTech program integrates a hands-on, minds-on philosophy and provides students with
an interactive approach to learning. The program is enhanced through the science and
technology curriculum and through participation in activities such as excursions, guest
speakers, competitions and clubs.
SciTech—grades 9 to 12
Students can apply for the SciTech program in grade 9 without having attended the program in
middle school. In grades 9 and 10, SciTech students will explore a range of technology and
science skills, knowledge, applications and career pathways. In grade 11 and 12, students will
focus on an interest in a science or technology pathway. Students receive a certificate upon
completion of the four-year program.

Strings
Students enrolled in the Regional Strings program (for violin, viola, cello and bass) have the
opportunity to explore the many facets of string playing through Chamber Strings (for advanced
players), Intermediate Strings (for students with one or two years’ experience), and Beginning
Strings (for students with no previous experience). While still completing the Ontario curriculum,
students in the strings program will experience a range of musical opportunities including
performing with full orchestra and ensemble, professional coaching sessions, attendance at live
concerts and rehearsals, master classes with professional musicians, and an educational
excursion to Europe in alternate years. Students receive a certificate upon completion of the
four-year program.

Truck and Coach Technology
The Truck and Coach Technology program offered at Bramalea Secondary School compliments
the school’s existing Specialist High Skills Major program in transportation. Students in the
Truck and Coach Technology program will complete all requirements of the Ontario secondary
school diploma, while taking courses focused on various aspects of the transportation industry.
Classes will take place in a new state-of-the-art facility. The program prepares students for entry
into post-secondary programs, or a career in the transportation industry upon graduation.
