DEPARTAMENTO DE IDIOMAS PROGRAMA ANALÍTICO MATERIA SPEECH CODIGO LNG 415 1. DESCRIPTION: This is an intensive eight-week course in which students will be given the opportunity to enhance and improve their oral skills. Students will engage in a number of activities designed to put into practice and build the critical thinking skills they have, and improve oral competencies. Students will utilize these skills in Informal and formal presentations and debates. The objective will be to increase student confidence and prepare them to present ideas and opinions in a professional manner. 2. OBJECTIVES: 2.1 GENERAL: To facilitate the development of communicative competency in order to provide students a strong foundation for further development of oral competencies. 2.2 SPECIFIC: 1. To facilitate proficiency in communication skills through discourse competence (ability to interact with native speakers) 2. To facilitate the development of sociolinguistic skills (ability to interact in different professional situations) 3. To facilitate the mastery of linguistic skills (the ability to choose the correct forms and structures in order to express a specific meaning. 4. To transmit and encourage the growth of linguistic knowledge through a positive classroom atmosphere in which activities represent the students reality and that of people living in English-speaking cultures. 3. COMPETENCIES: A. Produce clear, smoothly flowing, well-structures speech with an effective logical structure which helps the recipient to notice and remember significant points. B. Give clear and detailed descriptions and presentations on complex subjects, integrating sub-themes, developing particular points and utilizing appropriate conclusions. C. Develop an argument systematically with appropriate highlighting and support of significant points. D. Give a clear, well-structured presentation of a complex subject, expanding and supporting points of view in detail. E. Be able to depart spontaneously from a prepared text and follow up interesting points raised by members of the audience often showing good fluency and ease of expression. F. To be able to present professionally and in a persuasive manner ideas and opinions 4. METHODOLOGY A. Students are exposed to a variety of tools, including giving them the foundation to be able to create and present speeches in professional environments B. Students are given the opportunity to speak and develop oral skills, including tone, modulation, and volume, through a variety of presentation opportunities, and self and peer evaluation. They also practice and develop their speaking presence, including areas such as professional dress and body language. They also are provided opportunities to speak in front of peers regularly to help overcome the nervousness of speaking in public. 6.
