Library Resources for you to consider:
The Catalogue: Is a searchable list of all the things that UTS library owns or subscribes to.
It’s useful for finding the location of books, dvd’s and for linking into online journals.
Using the catalogue to find online and paper books, dvds and also links to individual
journal titles.
If you are searching for books by keyword be aware of the ‘search within’ feature in the catalogue
and also the ‘refine’ options – that can limit to only online resources, amongst other things.
Search within results option (see below)
Restrict to online option (see below)
Some specialist titles for property students in the catalogue include:
CityScope (sales histories of office blocks in the CBD, harcopy service only) http://find.lib.uts.edu.au/search.do?R=OPAC_b1297187
PCA reports on the building industry - http://find.lib.uts.edu.au/search.do?N=4293890018
Building industry reports published by BIS Shrapnel http://find.lib.uts.edu.au/search.do?N=0&Ntk=All&Ntx=matchallpartial&Ntt=bis%20shrapnel
If the book you need is out on loan, you can use the
catalogue to source it from
another library. You can even use this catalogue to find books other libraries will loan to you, that
UTS does not own.
For other things you need that you can access through the Catalogue or Bonus, or for
journal article you can’t find via our databases – use the interlending system http://www.lib.uts.edu.au/students/borrowing-and-membership/interlending-service
Databases: Databases are specialised search engines that look for articles from across a
wide range of journals. You can access lists of databases that are relevant to Property
Development through the ‘find databases’ box on the home page, which is above the
catalogue box (see previous graphic)
Suggested Databases: ScienceDirect
ScienceDirect is a very large database that is all full text, meaning everything you find when
you search will have a pdf attached. It’s not based in Australia, but has information about
Australian property that you can find, as well as a wealth of overseas scholarship.
Suggested Database: Agis Plus Text
AGIS plus text is useful because it offers journal articles with an Australian focus, and can
also refer you to various issues of law, be they case law or legislation. AGIS Plus text articles
are sometimes available in ‘full-text’ which means you can read the article straight away. If a
link to ‘full text is not provided’ try the
article elsewhere.
icon to conduct a search for the full text
The example below shows the link to legislation relevant to the article:
When you press the
link (not pictured above, but available) and there
is full text available, results should look like the picture below. Press ‘go’ to
retrieve.
Suggested Databases: Google Scholar
There are other databases that are pertinent to Property Development, such as
Informaworld and Business Source Premier. However an alternative to trying these sources
is to combine all UTS databases and search them via the Google Scholar interface. If you are
off campus you’ll need to provide this url first before being able to access this service (or
find the Google Scholar link via the Find Databases page):
http://ezproxy.lib.uts.edu.au/login?url=http://scholar.google.com.au/
Once Google Scholar is configured you should see ‘link to full text’ icons next to anything
UTS subscribes to (see below):
Symbols for Database Searching:
An asterisk (*) – can be used to finish a word in a variety of ways.
Eg: cultur* = culture, cultures, cultural, etc. Does not work in Google Scholar though.
Quotation Marks (“ ..”) – can be used to search for a phrase
Eg; “global warming” searches for these words next to eachother
Legal Resources - LawOne/ Legal Online
LawOne will track legislation for you. The search interface makes it easy to search by
jurisdiction and by the type of legislation you need:
Legal Online contains commentaries on aspects of Building, as well as an interface to search
for case law by keyword
Specialist Property Resources:
RP Data & Domain Property Data
These are specialist databases of property ownership and sales, that are used by real estate
agents to value property and also prospect for new clients. RP Data covers the whole of
Sydney, Domain Property Data contains all of NSW. RP Data is pictured below. Both are
accessible from the Property Development find databases page.
Costweb will allow you to look at the costs of building different types of premises over time
ie: for a hotel or club – it can do so quarterly and also project into the future.
Costweb will also provide building price indicies for city wide building types, Building Costs/
sqm, Building Cost Models, and more. You can choose different years for the software to
project.
Costweb is available via the find databases page, or you can type costweb into the
catalogue, or follow this link: http://find.lib.uts.edu.au/search.do?R=OPAC_b2605599
Rawlinson’s Cost Guide: Rawlinson’s cost guide provides you with building prices indicies
across all Australian states as well as prices of various types of construction materials. It also
contains a section on building planning administration and management.

Referencing & Referencing Software
The Harvard(UTS) is the preferred referencing system for your faculty. There is a guide to it
on the library website.
There is software, such as EndNote, that will help you with your referencing. EndNote can
export references from the internet, stores them, and can place them into your word
processing software. The library runs training in EndNote
