Ulrichsweb Periodicals Directory http://ulrichsweb.serialssolutions.com

limit search results to “open access” and “peer reviewed” view table of contents of the journals from library subscribed version
Check the impact factor or article citation rates of an OA journal
Journal Citation Reports (JCR) (Access via Web of Science from library subscription)
SCImago Journal Rank (SJR)( Access via Scopus from library subscription)
Google Scholar- see how many citations the articles from an OA journal receive.
PubMed Single Citation Matcher (PMC) – for life and health sciences journals only http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/citmatch
Check if the journal’s name is on ERA’s journal list http://lamp.infosys.deakin.edu.au/era/
For the journals not included in JCR, SJR, PMC and EAR’s journal list, below methods are useful:
Evaluate the background of an OA publisher
Publishers on OASPA’s member list are preferred http://oaspa.org/membership/members/
Check Jeffery Beall’s List of Predatory Publishers to avoid
Publishers with bad reputation http://scholarlyoa.com/publishers/
Choose OA journals created by non-profit academic institutions
(universities, government research agencies, scholarly research bodies, etc).
Reputable traditional publishers have some OA journals eg.
Elsevier, SAGE, Wiley, Nature, Springer, Taylor & Francis.
Check the journal’s editorial board and evaluate the published
articles
NOTE APCs (Article Processing Charges often apply, they can be from $1000-$3000. There is some assistance, however this is an issue each faculty deals with in its own way). Also ask your research office if there are funds available.

If you’re applying for a grant, include publishing costs
Important! If you need financial support from UTS library, please check the journal list of UTS library’s APC pilot https://www.lib.uts.edu.au/open-access/publish/pilot-guidelines
Publishing in OA journal aims to extend author’s impact, it’s important to choose a publisher with good ALMs presentations
ALMs examine the impact on article level instead of journal level
ALMs incorporate both traditional citation and altmetrics data
ALMs examine the impact, immediacy and socialization of an article
Example: PLOS ONE http://www.plosone.org/
Publish in Green OA- deposit pre-print manuscript or publisher’s version to institution’s repositories or subject OA repositories
Important! Be aware of copyright permissions:
Deposit the copy of your article in Research Master. Library staff will pick it up form there and do the checks on whether a copy can be deposited in the institutional repository or on websites like www.Academia.edu
Check copyright policies of publishers. The accepted manuscript is the key version that the library needs. This is sometimes called the Postprint. It’s the version post peer review.
