Job profile Job title Learning Technologist – instructional design Responsible to VLE Team Leader Job purpose To inform the development of pedagogical content, and advise on best use of web technologies on CIPD’s LMS and associated technologies across the Institute. To enable the CIPD to continue to offer market leading and innovative learning programmes/CPD tools. Provide support for e-learning innovation across all CIPD learning programmes/CPD tools. Key accountabilities 1 Using instructional design and pedagogical knowledge, work within the Moodle and Mahara environments to drive the development of creative and innovative e-learning materials/activities within the CIPD’s virtual learning environment (VLE). 2 Develop appropriate learning activities/materials and training plans for different internal and external user groups. This includes students, tutors and internal staff, via relevant methods/media, such as Moodle activities, screen-casts, and webinars. 3 In conjunction with the business managers, develop the associate tutors help area in Moodle. A dynamic course that shares knowledge about functionalities and potential of the VLE, encouraging tutor engagement and ultimately that of the students. 4 Use Articulate and Camtasia authoring tools to develop and build training modules for internal and external use. Create CIPD branded templates for use in interactive presentations and e-learning modules. 5 Provide technical support of the maintenance of the VLE, answering and resolving queries. 6 Assist in the development and ongoing maintenance of all qualifications and Quality Assurance procedures. Contribute to meetings and cyclical reviews to ensure they are achieving the desired Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s). 7 Continuously research and recommend new e-learning technologies/practices and ways they can be implemented to improve our offering for the student learning experience. Keep up-to-date with the e-learning industry, specifically focusing on all aspects of Moodle, Mobile Learning, MOOC’s, and e-portfolios through external research, user groups, and seminars to ensure future business remains competitive. 8 Contribute to the learning technologies strategy, in order to enable the CIPD to offer leading edge online qualification and CPD areas. 9 Have an appreciation of and commitment to adhering to best practice in user experience, online copyright, data protection, equal opportunities issues. Nature and scope Developments of blended learning programmes and the use of VLEs (virtual learning environments) to support these are expanding rapidly. The job holder will be required to provide pedagogical advice on the ongoing development of our e-learning offer. They will play a key role on the instructional design front, in order to bring a truly engaging e-learning experience to CIPD Training’s online courses. The post holder should be an experienced user of Moodle (or equivalent LMS). They should be able to confidently promote the most effective learning solution using various functionalities/plug-ins. They must be able to develop/build creative and innovative e-learning activities within the CIPD’s LMS. They will play a key role in these developments, working closely with all stakeholders including Business Managers, Business Executives, subject matter experts (SME’s), tutors and other relevant parties. The job holder will support the maintenance of the VLE. They’ll be expected to flag technical issues to the IT Team and external web developers. They’ll be expected to prepare help documentation/screen-casts for internal and external users, and it’s essential they adhere to CIPD house style when producing these. Knowledge, qualifications and experience Of graduate calibre, the post holder will have strong pedagogical knowledge in e-learning and blended learning design. Solid instructional design experience is required and experience designing e-learning content using e-learning authoring tools (ideally Articulate and Camtasia) would be beneficial. They should also have an appreciation of best practice in online user experience including usability and accessibility, information architecture, legal requirements, online copyright and data protection. Excellent communication skills are essential with a ‘can do’ approach as well as experience of oral presentations to internal and external customers. The role requires someone who is very organised, with the ability to prioritise, work under pressure and to work unsupervised. The jobholder must be a good team player as well as providing support to others within the team is essential. The job holder must be methodical, numerate, and logical, have excellent attention to detail and ensure CIPD house style is adhered to at all times. Ability to clearly and succinctly communicate technical and pedagogical concepts to others. The following are desirable for the jobholder: Mahara or other e-portfolio tool E-learning authoring tools, e.g. Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, etc. Adobe Creative Suite TurnItIn anti-plagiarism detection technology Sound editing software, such as Audacity.
