St Michael’s C of E VC Nursery & Infant School Reading week newsletter Monday 14th October We would like St Michael’s to become known as an ‘outstanding reading school’. There is a wealth of evidence around showing that by encouraging good early reading habits we can give children an excellent start in life. All St Michael’s staff have a real passion for reading and we want all our children to catch the bug! So… …SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK For the first 20 minutes to half an hour of each day parents and relations are invited to come in with their children and share books with them in their classrooms. At the end of each day (not Friday) they can come in too and do the same again before home time. Monday: Bedtime reading focus– children (and teachers) are invited to come to school in nightwear (pyjamas, nighties, dressing gowns etc., over uniform clothes if it’s chilly). Teddies and pillows are welcome too. Tuesday: Norfolk Children’s Book Centre will be displaying books in the hall and will be reading some of their favourite stories to children in each class throughout the day. The children will also have a chance to browse and doors will open at 2.30 so that you can come in and buy if you wish. A percentage of takings will come back to the school for us to spend on much needed home reading books. Reading Cafes Throughout this week each class in turn will open its doors to parents and families at 2pm for a ‘Reading Café’. This will be the first time we have done this and we would be really pleased if you could find time to support the idea. The aim is quite simply to foster a love of reading and books. Teachers will choose and read one book to all comers and will provide a series of simple art and craft activities to enjoy, based on the story or text. Monday – Cherry Tuesday – Apple Wednesday – Willow Thursday – Beech If you can come please tell your child’s teacher so she knows how many to expect! Nursery ‘Reading Café’ will be Tuesday and Thursday morning from 9am. During the week children will also be visiting other classes to share their favourite books, and teachers and teaching assistants will be reading to different groups of children. Reading for funds: Our Pongro fund is growing steadily, thanks to those brave teddies. Now we’d like to use reading as a way of raising even more money as well as encouraging the reading habit. Your child will be bringing home a Ready Steady Read sponsor card. When it is completed and the reading done, please return it to school along with money raised. You may like to use the half term holidays to find more sponsors and squeeze a few more books in! Final collection date is Tuesday 5th November. Friday: Mufti day and a cake sale at the end of the day in aid of forthcoming SMASH events. There will also be a book sale, once again in aid of the Pongro toilet project. Contributions to both sales very gratefully received.
